Germantown Man Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison for Fatal Park Shooting

A Germantown man was sentenced Wednesday, October 7, to 60 years in prison, with all but 25 years suspended, for the fatal shooting of 34-year-old Kendall Butler, Jr. in Germantown Square Urban Park.

Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Louis Leibowitz also ordered Michael Aaron Lynn, 40, to serve five years of supervised probation upon release. Lynn pleaded guilty on July 20, 2026, to second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence.

According to the investigation by the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division Homicide Unit, Lynn and Butler had a dispute on November 8, 2025. Later that evening, Butler arrived at Germantown Square Urban Park in the 12200 block of Middlebrook Road, where Lynn was present.

At approximately 11:08pm, Lynn pulled out a handgun and shot Butler multiple times. The gun jammed while Lynn was firing. Butler was struck by three bullets and pronounced dead at the scene.

A responding K9 officer located Lynn within several hundred yards of the park, took him into custody and recovered the firearm from his pocket.

Assistant State’s Attorneys John Lalos and Victor Orion prosecuted the case.
