The City of Gaithersburg has officially renamed the Griffith Park Pavilion in honor of former City Council Member Henry F. Marraffa Jr., recognizing his more than two decades of service to the community.
A dedication ceremony was held October 6, with Mayor Jud Ashman, current and former City Council members, City staff, local leaders, and members of the Marraffa family gathering to honor Marraffa and his impact on Gaithersburg.
“When I think of Henry, I think of his legacy of kindness, commitment, and dedication to Gaithersburg’s future,” Ashman said. “We are fortunate to have had such a devoted public servant, and we are deeply grateful for Henry’s passion, innovation, and unwavering commitment to our community.”
Marraffa served Gaithersburg for more than two decades, including time on the Board of Appeals and Planning Commission and nearly 10 years on the City Council. He also represented the City on the boards of directors of the Maryland Municipal League and National League of Cities.
According to the City, Marraffa was a longtime advocate for economic development and supported Gaithersburg’s growth as a mixed-use and life sciences hub. Communities including Kentlands, Lakelands, Parklands, and Crown developed and grew during his tenure.
Marraffa also served on the Economic Development and Olde Towne Advisory Committees, where his work focused on economic development while preserving the history and character of Gaithersburg.
The pavilion at Griffith Park now bears his name in recognition of his years of public service and contributions to the city.
