Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is looking ahead to the next two school years, with the Board of Education reviewing draft calendars for the 2027-28 and 2028-29 school years.
As part of the process, MCPS is considering adopting school calendars two years at a time. The change would give families and staff more advance notice of important dates, including the first and last days of school, winter break, spring break and other scheduled closures.
The proposed calendars have been developed to meet recently updated Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) requirements. Those requirements include a minimum of 180 instructional days, required instructional hours and the completion of student make-up days before Juneteenth.
The drafts also address how MCPS would handle snow days and other emergency closures. Spring make-up days would be built into the calendars, while an authorized virtual-learning option could be used if extreme weather or other circumstances result in additional closures beyond those accounted for in the calendar.
Public feedback on the proposed calendars will be collected throughout October and November 2026. The Board of Education is expected to consider final adoption of the 2027-28 and 2028-29 calendars during its November 19, 2026 business meeting.
