Maryland Consumers Could Be Eligible for Compensation in Generic Drug Price-Fixing Case

Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown has joined a coalition of 45 states and territories seeking court approval of three settlements with generic drug manufacturers accused of conspiring to inflate prescription drug prices and limit competition.

The proposed settlements involve Ascend Laboratories, Citron Pharma and Mayne Pharma. Ascend would pay $400,000 to the states, while Mayne would pay $650,000. Citron, which has ceased operations, agreed to non-monetary terms. The companies also agreed to internal reforms intended to promote compliance with antitrust laws.

The settlements are part of a series of multistate antitrust cases involving allegations that generic drug manufacturers coordinated to raise prices and reduce competition. Previous settlements with other companies have totaled $496.5 million, according to the Maryland Attorney General’s Office.

Consumers who purchased certain generic prescription drugs in the United States between May 2009 and December 2019 may be eligible for compensation.

The states are preparing for the first trial in the broader litigation, which is scheduled to begin in Hartford, Connecticut, in February 2027.
