Maryland’s Top Ten High School Football Players of All Time

The DMV High School Football Coaches Association has released its “Maryland Built” ranking of the top 10 all-time football players who attended high school in Maryland, based on their college and professional careers. The full list can be seen below.

The list is limited to inactive players and features a collection of NFL stars, Pro Bowl selections, All-Pros and Super Bowl champions from high schools across the state.

Chuck Foreman, a Frederick High School graduate who went on to become a five-time Pro Bowler and the 1973 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, earned the No. 1 spot.

Jake Scott, who attended Bullis School in Potomac, ranks second. Scott was a five-time Pro Bowler, earned MVP honors in Super Bowl VII with the Miami Dolphins and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Suitland High School graduate NaVorro Bowman comes in at No. 3. The former San Francisco 49ers linebacker was a four-time First Team All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler after an All-American career at Penn State.

DeMatha Catholic graduate Brian Westbrook ranks fourth. Westbrook starred at Villanova before an NFL career highlighted by two Pro Bowl selections and a First Team All-Pro honor with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Crossland High School graduate Julian Peterson rounds out the top five. Peterson was a five-time Pro Bowler following an All-American career at Michigan State.

  1. Chuck Foreman – Frederick: Five Pro Bowls and 1973 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year
  2. Jake Scott – Bullis: Five Pro Bowls, Super Bowl VII MVP and College Football Hall of Fame
  3. NaVorro Bowman – Suitland: Four-time First Team All-Pro, three Pro Bowls and Penn State All-American
  4. Brian Westbrook – DeMatha: Two Pro Bowls, First Team All-Pro and 2001 Walter Payton Award winner
  5. Julian Peterson – Crossland: Five Pro Bowls and Michigan State All-American
  6. Mike Curtis – Richard Montgomery: Four Pro Bowls, Super Bowl V champion and two-time First Team All-ACC selection at Duke
  7. Joe Haden – Friendly: Three Pro Bowls, national champion and All-American at Florida
  8. Shawne Merriman – Frederick Douglass (Upper Marlboro): Three Pro Bowls, 2005 Defensive Rookie of the Year and NFL sacks leader in 2006 with 17
  9. Darnell Dockett – Paint Branch: Three Pro Bowls, 40.5 career NFL sacks and Florida State standout
  10. Raymond Chester – Frederick Douglass (Baltimore): Four Pro Bowls, Super Bowl XV champion and Black College Football Hall of Fame member

The association also gave honorable mentions to Cameron Wake, Tavon Austin, Antonio Freeman, E.J. Henderson and Tom Scott.
