The City of Gaithersburg has received the Government Finance Officers Association’s (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its Fiscal Year 2027 budget, marking the 25th consecutive year the city has earned the recognition.
The award, presented to Gaithersburg’s Department of Finance and Administration, is the GFOA’s highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting. The city’s FY27 budget, which covers the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2026, also received special recognition for its Capital Program.
To qualify for the award, a budget must meet nationally recognized guidelines designed to evaluate how effectively it functions as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communications device. Budget documents must receive a rating of “proficient” in all four categories and across 14 mandatory criteria.
“We are extremely proud of this significant achievement,” said Janice Hartman, Director of the Department of Finance and Administration. “This award affirms the dedication and commitment to excellence of the City staff who worked diligently to prepare an accurate budget that is easily understandable by all of the City’s stakeholders.”
The Government Finance Officers Association represents more than 25,000 members in the United States and Canada and provides best practices, professional development, resources, and research related to government finance.
