New $213 Million Northwood High School Taking Shape in Silver Spring

Construction continues on the new Northwood High School on University Boulevard in Silver Spring, with the more than $213 million project scheduled for completion in August 2027, in time for the start of the 2027-2028 school year (additional photos below).

The major Montgomery County Public Schools capital project will replace the existing Northwood facility with a significantly larger school designed to accommodate approximately 2,700 students. The expansion will add roughly 1,200 seats as MCPS works to address long-term enrollment needs across the Downcounty Consortium.

The new school will feature updated, technology-enabled classrooms, specialized STEM laboratories, career-focused technical education spaces, and expanded areas for art and music programs.

Athletic facilities are also receiving a major overhaul. Plans include a new main stadium field and upgraded stadium amenities, along with synthetic turf options, an auxiliary gymnasium, track and field facilities, and dedicated court spaces.

Performing arts and community-use spaces will include a new auditorium, dance studios, and specialized support areas for performances. The facilities are being designed to accommodate school productions as well as larger community and regional events.

Northwood students have been attending classes at the newly constructed Charles W. Woodward High School facility since fall 2024 while construction takes place at the Northwood campus. Northwood will continue using Woodward as its holding school through the end of the 2026-2027 school year.

Under the current schedule, Northwood students will move into their new Silver Spring campus for the 2027-2028 school year, while Woodward is expected to officially open as its own high school in fall 2027.
