Shakespeare made over 2,300 references to love, lovers or beloved within the entire body of his work. Just as every play has a banquet scene, surely there are as many love scenes. Right? That’s what one would think. The truth is that actual love scenes as we think of them today are few and far between, which begs the question, what is The Bard’s relationship to love? And does his version of love truly stand the test of time?
Love’s the Thang! is a blend of Shakespearean love scenes paired with foundational Black music, spoken word, and poetry. It’s the ultimate Shakespearean love remix that tries to define the thing that even Shakespeare could never quite wrap his head around…love.
