Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is asking families, staff, students, and community members to weigh in on three proposed calendars for the 2027-2028 school year.
The new survey represents the second phase of MCPS’ calendar development process and will remain open through Friday, November 6. Each of the three proposals includes a different start and end date for students:
- Draft 1: Student transition day Monday, August 23, 2027; first day for all students Tuesday, August 24; last day Thursday, June 8, 2028.
- Draft 2: Student transition day Wednesday, August 25, 2027; first day for all students Thursday, August 26; last day Monday, June 12, 2028.
- Draft 3: Student transition day Monday, August 30, 2027; first day for all students Tuesday, August 31; last day Thursday, June 15, 2028.
All three proposed calendars have the same winter break and spring break. The survey asks participants to indicate how strongly they agree or disagree that each draft calendar “furthers the educational interests and operational needs” of MCPS.
According to the school system, feedback from the survey will be one component of the calendar development process. MCPS must also consider educational and operational needs, state-mandated school closures, minimum instructional day and credit-hour requirements, contingencies for inclement weather and other emergencies, professional days, early release days, and assessment schedules.
MCPS said its goal is to develop a calendar that provides effective time for teaching and learning while allowing for professional growth and instructional planning and maintaining a focus on equity and community engagement.
