First of Three IKEA Locations in DC, Maryland, and Virginia Closes Tomorrow

The first of three IKEA Plan and Order locations slated to close across the DMV will shut its doors on Sunday, October 18.

IKEA’s Plan and Order with Pickup location in Georgetown will close October 18, followed by the Annapolis location on October 30 and Fairfax on November 30. The company’s full-size College Park store and its Plan and Order location at Rio in Gaithersburg will remain open.

IKEA said the closures are part of its strategy to build a more affordable, accessible and sustainable business, with the company continuing to invest in home delivery, pickup services and digital shopping. Employees at the affected locations will have opportunities to relocate to nearby IKEA stores, including College Park.

Customers with ongoing projects at the closing locations will be able to continue working with IKEA through other locations or remotely online. The Gaithersburg location opened in March 2024 at 101 Boardwalk Place. Unlike a traditional IKEA store, the smaller location allows customers to meet with IKEA specialists to design, price and order products for projects such as kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms. Products and food are not available for immediate purchase at the location.

The Rio IKEA is open from 11am to 7pm seven days a week.
