Gaithersburg Defeats Rockville in Annual Snow Plow Competition

The City of Gaithersburg’s annual “Snow Road-eo” returned to the Activity Center at Bohrer Park on Thursday, October 15, bringing city crews together to prepare for the upcoming winter weather season.

This year’s event also brought back the jurisdictional challenge between Gaithersburg and Rockville, with each city’s top teams competing for the winning trophy.

For the challenge, teams consisting of a snow plow driver and navigator competed in a timed obstacle course featuring eight stations along a plotted route. The course tested participants’ ability to operate large machinery in tight spaces, similar to conditions crews regularly encounter while plowing courts and newer developments with on-street parking.

The winning jurisdiction was determined using the average scores of its top four teams. Gaithersburg took top honors with a score of 2,930 points.

The event also featured Gaithersburg’s own championship competition, with city teams participating in timed and scored events that included a written test, pre-trip truck inspections, and the obstacle course.

Travis Testerman and Wayne Watkins finished in first place, followed by Justin Storm and Paul Morgan in second place and Mark Smith and Andrew Rosencrantz in third.

The annual Snow Road-eo serves as both a team-building event and an opportunity for crews to sharpen the skills needed for snow removal operations ahead of the winter season.
