Maryland and Head Football Coach Mike Locksley Mutually Part Ways

Maryland and head football coach Mike Locksley have mutually agreed to part ways, according to John Talty of CBS Sports.

Talty reported Wednesday that Locksley and the university have separated with Maryland sitting at 2-5 this season. Locksley finishes his tenure with a 39-54 overall record across eight seasons as Maryland’s head coach. A Washington, D.C. native, Locksley first served as Maryland’s interim head coach for six games in 2015 before returning to take over the program full-time ahead of the 2019 season.

Locksley’s most successful stretch came from 2021 through 2023, when Maryland posted three consecutive winning seasons and won three straight bowl games. The Terrapins went 7-6 in 2021, 8-5 in 2022 and 8-5 in 2023.

Maryland slipped to 4-8 in 2024 and 4-8 again in 2025 before beginning the 2026 season 2-5. The Athletic and FOX reporter Bruce Feldman shared that co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Aazaar Abdul-Rahim will be the interim head coach.
