The Washington Spirit have agreed to a new multi-year contract with midfielder Deborah Abiodun, keeping the Nigerian international in Washington through at least the 2028 season. Abiodun signed a new two-year deal through 2028 with a mutual option for 2029, the club announced Thursday.
“The Spirit has become my home over the past year and I’m thrilled to renew my commitment to DC,” Abiodun said. “I have seen a lot of growth in my game with this club and I look forward to continuing to contribute to its success over the next three seasons.”
Abiodun originally signed with the Spirit ahead of the 2025 season and spent the first half of the year on loan as she began her professional career. Washington recalled her in August 2025, and she quickly became an important part of the club’s midfield during its run to the NWSL Championship.
The 23-year-old has made 21 appearances for Washington, recording one goal and one assist. “Deb brings a very unique skillset to our midfield,” Sporting Director James Hocken said. “She brings an incredible energy off the ball and is a calming influence on it. Her development since starting on our loan pathway has been a joy to watch and we are excited to keep her in the District for the foreseeable future.”
A native of Oyo, Nigeria, Abiodun has also represented the Nigerian senior national team since making her Super Falcons debut in 2022. She competed in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and 2024 Olympic Games and helped Nigeria win the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, the country’s record-extending 10th continental title.
Before turning professional, Abiodun played two seasons at Pitt, totaling 10 goals and three assists across 34 appearances. She earned All-ACC honors in both seasons, including Second Team All-ACC recognition in 2024.
The Spirit return to Audi Field on Sunday, Nov. 1 for their Decision Day matchup against Chicago Stars FC. Kickoff is scheduled for 5pm as Washington hosts its annual Fan Appreciation Night.
