The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will begin its annual leaf vacuuming program on Monday, November 9, with collections continuing into December.
The program provides two potential leaf collections for homes within the designated collection district. MCDOT will post signs along neighborhood streets ahead of scheduled pickups to notify residents of collection dates.
Residents are asked to pile leaves at the edge of their yards or curbs, but not in streets, bike lanes or sidewalks, where they can create safety hazards and clog storm drains.
According to MCDOT, crews collected more than 73,000 cubic yards of leaves last year. The leaves are composted at a County-operated facility in Dickerson and turned into Leafgro, a fertilizer sold at retail stores. Residents who miss their scheduled collections or live outside the district can place leaves in paper yard trim bags or reusable containers for pickup on their regular recycling day. Plastic bags will not be accepted.
Residents can check collection schedules and determine whether their property is included at montgomerycountymd.gov/leafing.
