MCPS Releases First Academic Performance Update of the School Year

Montgomery County Public Schools shared an early look at student academic performance for the 2026-2027 school year during a Montgomery County Board of Education meeting on Thursday, Oct. 22. The full meeting can be seen below.

The first-quarter update focused on fall assessment results in reading and mathematics, highlighting areas of progress as well as areas where MCPS says additional improvement and support are needed.

According to MCPS, more than 61% of students in kindergarten through third grade met the fall reading benchmark. Results among first- and second-grade students improved slightly compared with fall 2025.

In middle school reading, eighth-grade students demonstrated stronger performance than seventh-grade students across student groups, according to the district.

Mathematics results varied by grade level. Nearly 52% of students in kindergarten through fifth grade met the fall mathematics benchmark, with fourth- and fifth-grade students posting the strongest results among elementary grades.

In middle school, the percentage of students meeting mathematics benchmarks increased with each grade level. Approximately 27.7% of sixth-grade students met the benchmark, compared with 51.2% of eighth-grade students.

MCPS said the fall assessments provide an early starting point for measuring achievement and tracking student progress throughout the school year. The district plans to use the results to identify areas of need and adjust instruction and academic support.

As part of that effort, MCPS said it is focusing on strengthening classroom instruction while providing additional instructional time, small-group interventions and individualized assistance for students who need additional support.

The district also plans to expand instructional coaching, professional learning and collaboration for teachers. Assessments, classroom observations and school support teams will be used throughout the year to monitor student progress and determine where adjustments may be needed.

MCPS said families will receive regular information about student academic performance, including progress reports through Synergy, assessment results and notifications when students may need additional academic support.

The work is part of the district’s MCPS Future Ready Strategic Plan, which includes a focus on academic achievement and preparing students for success after graduation.
