Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced a $600,000 settlement with financial technology company Brigit following an investigation into alleged unfair and deceptive practices involving its cash advance service.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, Brigit has offered its Instant Cash service in Maryland since 2019, allowing consumers to receive advances that are repaid from their wages.
The state’s Consumer Protection Division alleged that the company engaged in unlicensed lending and misled consumers between December 2019 and October 2023 by failing to clearly disclose additional fees for instant access to cash advances. Investigators also alleged that Brigit advertised advance amounts for which some consumers did not qualify and prevented customers with unpaid advances from canceling subscriptions or recurring charges.
Under the settlement, Brigit must clearly disclose loan terms, fees, and eligibility requirements, allow consumers to cancel recurring charges at any time, and comply with Maryland’s lending and consumer protection laws.
The company is also required to pay $600,000 to the Consumer Protection Division of the Maryland Attorney General’s Office.
