Bethesda has been named one of “The 25 Best Places to Live in the U.S.” by Architectural Digest (AD), with the publication highlighting the Montgomery County community’s combination of suburban living, access to Washington, D.C., and its own strong arts and entertainment scene.
Architectural Digest, the Condé Nast publication best known for its coverage of design, architecture, luxury real estate, and lifestyle, based its list on U.S. News & World Report’s recent ranking of the best places to live in the country. AD then narrowed its focus to communities it considers particularly appealing to art and design lovers.
“To determine the best cities in the country, U.S. News considers a multitude of factors, including quality of life, the local job market, value for your money, and the place’s desirability,” Architectural Digest wrote. “And while we agree that all these factors are important in determining where to live in America…we’d also throw access to art and design into the mix.”
For Bethesda, AD highlighted the community’s ability to offer the comforts of suburban living while providing easy access to Washington, D.C., noting that residents don’t necessarily need to leave Bethesda to find arts and entertainment.
The publication specifically pointed to Strathmore, the 1,976-seat music venue that regularly hosts the National Philharmonic Orchestra, along with Bethesda Theater and Round House Theatre. Bethesda’s Arts & Entertainment District, including its galleries and public art, was also highlighted.
“Bethesda has plenty going on in terms of arts and entertainment,” AD wrote.
According to figures included by Architectural Digest, Bethesda has a population of 74,788, an average commute of 28 minutes, a median home value of $1,143,248, median monthly rent of $2,164, and a median household income of $190,712.
The recognition follows several other recent national rankings for Bethesda. Earlier this year, U.S. News & World Report ranked Bethesda No. 4 on its list of the “Best Places to Live for Quality of Life in the U.S. in 2026-2027,” which analyzed 859 cities nationwide. U.S. News’ Quality of Life Index considers factors including residents’ satisfaction with their daily lives, crime, the quality and availability of health care, education, and average commute time.
In 2025, Bethesda was also ranked the No. 2 safest suburb in the United States in a study that evaluated 360 suburbs located within 45 minutes of a major city. The study considered violent crime, property crime, drug overdoses, traffic deaths, and excessive drinking in determining its rankings.
