A 20-year-old Boyds man has been sentenced to five years in prison for causing a fatal crash while driving under the influence of alcohol and traveling approximately 94 mph on Great Seneca Highway.
Brody Richardson was sentenced on Friday, October 30, in Montgomery County Circuit Court to 10 years in prison, with all but five years suspended, followed by five years of supervised probation. He pleaded guilty in August to grossly negligent manslaughter by motor vehicle and homicide by motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
The crash occurred on July 21, 2025, at approximately 10:30 pm, when Richardson, driving a 2021 Mazda 3 northbound on Great Seneca Highway, struck a Subaru Forester driven by 71-year-old Mary Elizabeth Moody as she attempted to turn left onto Mateny Road. Moody was killed in the collision.
According to investigators, Richardson had a blood alcohol concentration of .20, more than twice the legal limit, and admitted to consuming alcohol and marijuana before driving. Surveillance footage and receipts showed he consumed five beers at Travilah Beer & Wine in Rockville before leaving shortly before the crash.
Two employees of the store, William Bolek and Richard Bolek, also pleaded guilty to selling alcohol to someone under 21. Each received a two-year suspended prison sentence, three years of supervised probation and 200 hours of community service. Both were also ordered to donate $1,000 to charity and prohibited from working at businesses that sell alcohol while on probation.
