MoCo Spotlight: Whitman Alum Is Changing Youth Sports In MoCo

Koa Sports CEO, Tony Korson, takes a swing at the Koa’s state-of-the-art training facility in North Bethesda.

Tony Korson, the founder and CEO of Koa Sports, describes himself as a Bethesda boy with a love of baseball and a belief in the power of youth sports.

It has been nearly 9 years since Korson founded the company in August of 2009. Since then he has brought in many former college and professional athletes to teach youngsters the fundamentals in a an open-registration, recreation-level sports program, which also includes a travel program that has helped earn hundreds of athletes spots on high school teams, and placed dozens of athletes in college.

Korson had to hire his own coach as a baseball player at Whitman High School and that led to a high school career which earned him a scholarship to Florida Gulf Coast University and propelled him into the Walt Whitman High School Sports Hall of Fame.

He started Koa Sports because he wanted to combine elite coaching with a fun atmosphere that focuses on positivity. Korson mentioned that every athlete will get the opportunity to play, they’ll each have their names on the back of their jerseys, and the focus will be positive learning experiences, good values, and camaraderie.

In late January of 2017, Koa opened their state-of-the-art training facility on Boiling Brook Parkway in North Bethesda. At the facility young athletes can hone their skills in two batting cages complete with turf pitching lanes, a full-sized basketball court with two additional training hoops, a sport-court for field hockey games, and much more.

Though most of the athletes currently come from students in the Bethesda, Potomac, and Rockville area, Koa would like to continue to expand and offer their unique approach to youth sports to all areas in Montgomery County.

Koa is always looking for talented staff members to add to the team, do you think you have what it takes to be an amazing youth sports coach? You can give them a call at (301) 229-7529 or e-mail them at [email protected].

The MoCoShow will be working with Koa to host a “Best 3-Point Shooter in MoCo” competition at the Koa facility. Details can be found below (click the flyer to register). Photos of the Koa facility are also available below.
