David Trone Wins Re-Election to the U.S. House in Tightly Contested Race

Representative David Trone (D) has been re-elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in Maryland’s 6th Congressional District, as called by the Associated Press. His opponent, Delegate Neil Parrott, called to concede the race earlier this afternoon. The race was tightly contested with Parrott leading until this afternoon.

“I want to thank Del. Parrott for his phone call this afternoon conceding the race. My promise to him, and to all of the people of the 6th District, is this: I’ll continue to work across the aisle to deliver results and get things done. Thank you, Maryland! Let’s get back to work.” Trone posted to social media.

Trone is the founder of Total Wine & More, an alcohol retailer that is headquartered in Bethesda and operates over 200 stores nationwide. Trone has been active in Democratic politics and hosted fundraisers for the party. In 2014, he hosted a fundraiser for gubernatorial candidate Anthony G. Brown, which was attended by former President Bill Clinton, and in November 2015, he held a fundraiser at his home for the Democratic National Committee, which was attended by President Obama.

Trone spent more than $13 million on his unsuccessful campaign to succeed Chris Van Hollen in Maryland’s 8th congressional district in 2016 (the most expensive self-funded House campaign ever). Trone won the Democratic primary election for Maryland’s 6th district against seven challengers, with 40 percent of the vote in 2018. In the general election, Trone faced Republican Amie Hoeber and candidates from other parties, where he won the U.S. House seat with 57.5 percent of the vote. Trone was rated the 15th most bipartisan member of Congress by the Common Ground Committee and, as of October 2022, voted in line with President Joe Biden’s stated position 100% of the time.
