The Maryland-D.C. Breeding Birds Atlas is an effort to document the changing behaviors of the different species. With more than 200 species of birds nesting in Maryland, the Atlas relies on volunteers to observe birds and report behaviors that may indicate the birds are breeding. Over time, that information can reveal details about the distribution, abundance, and timing of the birds’ nesting.

About the Speaker: Gabriel Foley coordinates the Maryland-DC Breeding Birds Atlas(opens in a new tab), a community-based science project mapping the distribution of birds in our area. Previously, he studied nighthawks in the Canadian boreal forest and how weavers in Africa build their nests. He has also hosted a weekly nature radio show called the Prairie Naturalist and is a trip leader for Quest Nature Tours.
