MoCo Mourns the Loss of Coach Roy Lester

Today we mourn the loss of Roy Lester (1923-2020)⁣

Coach Lester served the head football coach at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Maryland from 1959 to 1968. During his tenure, Richard Montgomery compiled an 86–10–1 record, which included six undefeated seasons. Lester’s teams were considered some of the best in the state (there were no playoffs at the time)⁣

At the end of his stint at Richard Montgomery in 1968, he held a 25-game winning streak, and his 1968 team was ranked third in the nation.⁣

After a successful career at the high school level, he served as the head coach of the University of Maryland football team from 1969 to 1971.⁣

He later came back to coach at Paint Branch and Magruder.⁣

In 15 seasons at Magruder, he accomplished the following:⁣

• A record of 108-50⁣
• 2 state titles in 84 and 86⁣
• 4 playoff appearances⁣

Future NFL linebacker Mike Curtis, who recently passed away, was among the players under Lester at Richard Montgomery.⁣

Coach Lester was also the first person to have been given a “Key to the City of Rockville.”⁣

Our condolences go out to his family.
