Updated to reflect that Kevin Hsieh graduated from Gaithersburg in 2013.
Washingtonian Magazine writes that “Food influencers love to promote restaurants as “hidden gems” to the TikTok and Instagram masses.” so the magazine put together a list of “The DC Area’s Best “Hidden Gem” Restaurants, According to Food Influencers”. Montgomery County’s Bao Bei was the only MoCo restaurant to be listed.
Bao Bei, specializing in authentic Taiwanese cuisine, opened last summer for pick-up and delivery through a ghost kitchen located at 11910 Parklawn Dr #O in Rockville. The ghost kitchen is owned and operated by Gaithersburg native, Kevin Hsieh, who graduated from Gaithersburg High School in 2013.
“The pork is SUPER tender and flavorful, and I can’t get enough of the scallion buns. I consider it a hidden gem since it’s not the easiest to find; [it’s] located in a ghost kitchen space behind the Nebel Street warehouses in a rather industrial part of Rockville. Just gotta find the door with the piggy sign!” —Sandie Soman, @adorkandherfork
We spoke with Kevin last year around the time he opened his restaurant.“The past few years I’ve attended food festivals and private events, but recently opened for pick-up and delivery (UberEats, DoorDash, Grubhub) at a ghost kitchen located in North Bethesda.” said Hsieh. “I’m excited to finally share it with our local community.”
The restaurant currently offers a menu that consists of Baos, Rice bowls and side dishes with our signature item being the Pork Belly Bao. Slow-braised pork belly inside fluffy handmade buns. “We do everything handmade, so you can really feel the authenticity and craft behind the food you consume. If you’ve never tried this before you are MISSING OUT.” Additional information on the restaurant can be found here.
