Montgomery Blair High School Principal Renay Johnson sent the following message to the school’s mailing list regarding an incident that occurred on Tuesday, August 29:
“Dear Montgomery Blair High School Families,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am contacting you to share a serious incident that occurred on school property involving one of our students. It is my utmost priority to ensure the safety and well-being of all students, so I wanted to provide you with all the pertinent information about the situation.
Today our security staff discovered that a student was in possession of one part of a ghost gun (not a complete operating firearm). As soon as this was discovered, our school security staff promptly intervened and followed our established safety protocols to address the situation immediately. The student’s parent was contacted, and the student was taken into custody by Montgomery County Police. As stated in the Montgomery County Public Schools’ Code of Conduct, having parts of a firearm on school property is illegal and prohibited.
I want to assure you that I take this incident very seriously, as the safety of all our students and staff is very important to me. We are committed to maintaining a secure and nurturing environment where all students can thrive academically and socially.
My security team and I are working closely with Montgomery County Police to thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure that appropriate actions are taken. I know that having part of a ghost gun or any weapon on school property can be unsettling. We have taken immediate steps to address the situation and provide necessary support for our students. Our school counselors and support staff will be available to offer any assistance or guidance your child may need.
We kindly request your cooperation in discussing this matter with your child at home, emphasizing the importance of adhering to school rules and the serious nature of the incident. Please speak with your child about the seriousness of having any weapons or parts of weapons on school property. The behavior will not be tolerated.
We are here to support you and your child and we remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our entire school community. A caring and supportive community is the Blair way. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s administrator at 240-740-7200. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Renay Johnson”
