Filippo’s Italian Specialties Has Been Sold; New Owners Excited to Carry the Torch

Former owner Filippo Leo

Back in September 2022 we reported that Filippo Leo, owner of Filippo’s Italian Specialties at 1226 Triangle Ln in Wheaton, was looking to sell the longstanding deli.

At the time, we were told the deli was doing great and the reason for selling was that “Filippo is just ready to retire.” Earlier this month, the sale was finalized with new owners Don and Celia Henderson, along with their daughter Shelley Scanzaroli, who will be managing the deli.

“We are thrilled to continue Filippo’s legacy and plan to run it as a family business just as Filippo has. We’ve been customers for around 40+ years. My mother discovered the deli and it has been a go to ever since. My sister first saw the news about the sale on your site and commented “Oh no, where am I going to get sausage for Nonni’s spaghetti sauce for my Christmas lasagna.”  Nonni is what we called our Italian grandmother,” said Don Henderson.

Filippo’s, which operated as Marchone’s until 2014, opened in 1955.  Previous owner Filippo Leo worked at the deli for over 35 years and took over ownership back in 2012, a year after founder Thomas Marchone passed away. In 2020, Filippo’s won the TasteMoCo tournament for “Best Deli” in Montgomery County, beating out 31 other delis that had all been nominated by readers of the MoCoShow to win the award. We’re told all of Filippo’s current employees are staying on.

Filippo wants to let his customers and friends know that he will still be coming by the store a couple times a month to “see the friends he has made over the years along with seeing the store blossom in the years to come.”  There will be a party held for Filippo this Saturday, November 25th at the store from 12:00-2:00pm with complimentary sub platters and cookies.
