Fire Caused by Overheating Cell Phone Charger Displaces Four Families and Causes Approximately $600,000 in Damage

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a 2-alarm fire in the 1700blk of East West Highway in Silver Spring around 11:30am on Wednesday, December 6.

According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the fire originated in a third floor bedroom at the Summit Hills Apartments complex. Occupants of four apartments have been displaced.  One person was evaluated by EMS and refused transport. The origin/cause of the fire was determined to be a cell phone charger that overheated nearby combustibles. Damage is estimated to be ~$600,000.
