The last remaining location of historic Maryland restaurant, Pizza Oven, has announced that it will be closing permanently at the end of this year.
In a post shared on social media on Tuesday, December 19th, Pizza Oven announced that it will close permanently on December 31st (available below). The restaurant, located at 6029 66th Street in Riverdale (Prince George’s County), has been in the same location since September 1957 and is a pioneer of Maryland Style Pizza.
Pizza Oven has been owned and operated by Takoma Park native Brian Boileau, who will be retiring at the end of the year. He opened the flagship location in Riverdale Park in 1957 and has several locations through the years, including in Montgomery County and as far as the eastern shore. The Riverdale location has remained constant, remaining open for over 66 years.
Per the restaurant’s website, “The walls are decorated with an eclectic mix of ties and baseball caps, donated by customers. We have collected hats from every state in the nation, and have records of customers from every country in the world except one. In addition to the hats, the restaurant is decorated by autographed pictures of sports legends including Cal Ripken and Joe Namath. And rather than placemats, restaurant staff laminates that day’s newspaper so diners will have something to read while chowing down.”
“It’s official, Mr. Brian is retiring and Pizza Oven is coming to an end. December 31st will be the last day. We are hosting Mr. Brian’s birthday all weekend and will conclude with a car show December 31st from 9am -12pm. We thank you for your years of patronage!”
