Freedom Farmers: Agricultural Resistance and the Black Freedom Movement | February 3 | 10-11:30 a.m. Brookside Gardens Live Zoom Event:
Join us for a discussion with Dr. Monica White, author and associate professor of Environmental Justice at the University of Wisconsin, as she expands the historical narrative of the Black freedom struggle to embrace the work, roles and contributions of southern Black farmers. Ages 18 and older.Registration required. Free.
Black History Month Family Day | February 10 | 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park, 16501 Norwood Road, Sandy Spring:
This year’s theme is “African Americans and the Arts.” Enjoy story time and hands-on activities celebrating African American heritage and accomplishments. Contribute to the “I Have a Dream Canvas,” create a compass and follow the path of Harriet Tubman. All ages. Free.
History Hour | February 15 | 6-7 p.m.
Josiah Henson Museum and Park, 11410 Old Georgetown Road, North Bethesda:
The topic of this lecture is “Differing Perspectives on Slavery in Maryland and the District of Columbia,” with historian James Johnston. Ages 12 and older. Registration required. $5 per person.
Black History Month Family Days | February 24 and 25 | 12-4 p.m.
Josiah Henson Museum and Park, 11410 Old Georgetown Road, North Bethesda:
Enjoy educational, hands-on activities to learn what a child’s life was like in the Dawn Settlement founded by Henson in Canada after escaping from Maryland via the Underground Railroad with his family. Free with paid admission ($4-children and seniors; $5-adults).
Josiah Henson Museum and Park is open Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (Park is open daily, sunrise to sunset). Special opening on Monday, February 19, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
