
The Montgomery County Council recently recognized Montgomery Blair High School social studies teacher Kenneth Smith for helping to develop and teach the Hip Hop History and Culture course.
The course, which is also offered at Bethesda-Chevy Chase and Rockville high schools, is recommended for juniors and seniors and is intended to connect the music genre to societal issues students experience. It was created in 2019.
The recognition was part of a commemoration of Black History Month, during which the council highlighted how African Americans have impacted visual arts, dance, music, fashion, folklore, language, film, cultural movements and more. The commemoration can be seen below:
