Police Warn of Scam Involving Individuals Impersonating Officers On The Phone

The Rockville City Police Department has posted on social media warning the public of a scam that involves individuals impersonating officers requesting money or payments over the phone, or instruct an individual to pay police to avoid arrest.

Recently, Montgomery County’s Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) warned residents to be wary of similar phone scams that attempt to obtain money and personal information. Last September, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office warned that it has been noticing an uptick in scam calls reported by residents of the County. “Sheriff Uy would like to remind everyone that the Sheriff’s Office will NEVER ask for money or financial information over the phone.” The full message from Rockville police can be seen below:

“The Rockville City Police Department will never contact an individual requesting any money or payments over the phone or instruct an individual to directly pay the police department to avoid arrest.

If you or a family member are contacted in regards to this type of scam or someone impersonating a police officer, contact your local law enforcement agency!”
