Rachel Chavkin, a stage director perhaps best known for directing the musicals Natasha, Pierre, & The Great Comet of 1812 and Hadestown, was recently honored by having 48th St. in New York renamed Chavkin Way on March 20th. She is a 1998 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School in Silver Spring.

According to Playbill, “Chavkin was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for her work on Natasha Pierre, & The Great Comet of 1812 and Hadestown, the latter of which won her the award. That season, Chavkin was the only female director on Broadway.”

Last year it was announced that Chavkin would be directing the Broadway-aimed Gatsby musical, which will premiere in 2024 at American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Gatsby premieres in May and is a musical adapted from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel “The Great Gatsby.” Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda are buried at St. Mary’s in Rockville.
