Silver Spring’s Denizens Brewing Co. Deals with Fallout of Weekend Burglary

In a world where small businesses all over Montgomery County are struggling to make headway under Covid-19’s new normal, one just had a new challenge thrown their way this past weekend.

Silver Spring-based Denizens Brewing Co. woke up Sunday morning to shattered glass strewn across the floor and bottles of product missing from their stores. The damage will cost thousands of dollars to fix, and Denizens hopes to have everything repaired quickly.

While it appears no one was hurt, this is just one more hurdle for a business that has worked diligently to evolve and survive under a environment defined by a cautious consumer base and various health-related county regulations & best practices.

However, it appears that Denizens is taking this obstacle in stride, seeking to maintain a positive outlook during a difficult situation and seeing the setback as a potential opportunity to do some good.

We caught up with Denizens co-founder Julie Verratti to discuss what had happened, and this is what she had to say:

“We are so grateful and heartened for the outpouring of support from the community. We’ve had a lot of people ask how they can help and if they can donate towards fixing the damage. It obviously helps for folks to continue buying our beer and hard seltzer through pick up, dine-in, or delivery, but also think a great way to support is to donate to any organization that is working on bettering our society.

This week we are bringing back our Mexican Chocolate Porter called Woman, You Nasty, which we’re releasing to raise funds for Fair Fight, an organization that is working on voting rights. We hope that folks can either donate to them or pick another organization to support. If we as a society did a better job of taking care of people, there would be a lot less of this type of crime. However frustrating this experience has been for us (both emotionally and financially), we are trying to see the big picture and use this as an opportunity to work towards a more empathetic world. Additionally, please continue to support local businesses. Our entire local economy depends on each other. And, we will all get through this if each of us does our part.”
