There is once again movement at 15790 Shady Grove Rd., the site of the previously planned Amazon Fresh location (former Office Depot location) in Gaithersburg.
Over a year ago, Amazon signage was removed from the building. Construction at the location was completed for months (shelving and signage inside the store, freezers/refrigeration up and running) and charging stations for electric vehicles were installed in the parking lot prior to the removal of Amazon signage.
The situation with the Gaithersburg Amazon location was not unique, as Amazon paused or cancelled dozens of stores across the country, many of which were also already built. Amazon Fresh currently has two locations in Montgomery County, both in Chevy Chase, at 8531 Chevy Chase Lake Terrace and 5463 Wisconsin Ave.
Now, construction employees are signing in and out of the grocery store location with the lights on inside. Signage is still up inside of the grocery store and deliveries appear to still be coming in (boxes with contents unknown). The construction lists the work as being done for “grocery store tenant”, so it’s unclear whether it’s Amazon Fresh making a return or a different tenant, but everything inside appears to be Amazon Fresh-related and Amazon is also currently hiring for the location (it’s unclear if this is a new development, but applications are being accepted).
