Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a house fire at 18900 Blue Heron Ln., near Centerway Rd, in Gaithersburg on Thursday morning.
In an update provided by MCFRS chief spokesperson Pete Piringer on Friday afternoon, it was noted that a passerby called 911. Firefighters were able to get two sleeping children out of the house. There was one smoke alarm in the home, which was activated, but was not heard by the children.
The origin/cause of the fire was improperly discarded smoking materials in a plastic trash can on the deck, which was on the side of the house. Damage is estimated to be approximately $75K.
