This Maryland Park Has The “Bluest Water in the State”

Rocky Gap State Park, nestled in Allegany County in Western Maryland (12500 Pleasant Valley Rd. Flintstone, MD 21530), spans more than 3,000 acres of public land and is known for having the “bluest water in the state”, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

The park is surrounded by rugged mountains, creating a breathtaking natural landscape. At its heart lies the 243-acre Lake Habeeb, celebrated for its strikingly blue waters— and widely referred to as the clearest in the state. The lake is nourished by Rocky Gap Run, which meanders through a stunning mile-long gorge featuring sheer cliffs, scenic overlooks, and a lush hemlock forest filled with rhododendron and mountain laurel. There are also sandy swimming beach areas for visitors to enjoy.

Evvitts Mountain, named after one of Allegany County’s earliest European settlers, towers above the lake, adding to the park’s serene beauty. Rocky Gap often reaches capacity on summer weekends and holidays, but September is a great time to visit with water temperatures still near their warmest and bearable temperatures without as much worry of full capacity (though it’s still possible that it can be reached).

The park is open daily from 7am until sunset, with a ranger on duty from 8am until sunset. Pets are allowed in Ash, Birch, Chestnut, Dogwood and Elm camp loops and common areas of campground and in Easter Hill Chalet. Pets are also allowed in day-use area and lake (except for designated sandy portions of swimming beach areas from Memorial Day weekend until after Labor Day).

The drive is anywhere between 1.5-2 hours from most parts of Montgomery County, but there’s a resort, golf course, and casino nearby if you want to make it an overnight or all day trip. Additional information can be found here.
