Bethesda

Bethesda’s Enviva Inc. (NYSE: EVA) (“Enviva,” “our,” “we,” or the “Company”), the world’s largest producer of industrial wood pellets for use as a renewable and sustainable energy source, announced that Thomas Meth, Enviva’s President, has been appointed the Company’s Chief Executive Officer and will become a member of Enviva’s board of directors (the “Board”), while retaining his title as President. The Company also announced that John Keppler, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, is expected to assume the role of Executive Chairman, consistent with the succession plan developed by the Board. Prior to doing so, Mr. Keppler will be stepping down from his responsibilities to pursue medical and surgical treatment to address a cardiac valve issue. The Company expects Mr. Keppler, who co-founded Enviva in 2004 with Mr. Meth, to remain available to the Company, and to return in the active Executive Chairman role early in 2023.

Additionally, the Company announced that Ralph Alexander, who has been a member of the Board since 2013, will fulfill Mr. Keppler’s duties as Chairman of the Board until Mr. Keppler’s return, when Mr. Alexander is expected to become Lead Independent Director. “After careful consideration, I have decided with my medical team and family to step back and focus on my heart condition,” said Mr. Keppler. “The Board and I are delighted that Thomas Meth will serve as our next CEO. Thomas has been my closest business partner in building Enviva into the great company it is today, and I know he will continue to excel in leading Enviva’s growth trajectory as we execute our plan for the future. Thomas is an exceptionally skilled leader who has full command of all facets of the Company and has earned the respect of our employees, customers, investors, and other key stakeholders.”


Kensington

With a strong selection of Filipino cuisine in the DC area, Eater put together a list that includes some places to “find fantastic Filipino food around DC.” While there are additional restaurants that serve Filipino cuisine in Montgomery County, three were included in the list by Eater– Gwenie’s Pastries, Kuya Ja’s Lechon Belly, and the worldwide fast-food chain Jollibee.

Gwenie’s Pastries (12113 Nebel St., Rockville): “Overseen by Stella Fernandez, whose brother Javier runs Kuya Ja’s Lechon Belly, this storefront supplies other local Filipino restaurants and markets with sweets developed by their mother, Gwendolyn. Try the ube cupcakes, with a vibrant color coming from the purple yam that’s a staple of Filipino desserts.


Gaithersburg

Per WSSC at 6:41pn on Wednesday, November 16th: Water main on Clopper Rd in Germantown was repaired this afternoon. Water has been restored to all impacted customers. Crews will now begin road repairs & paving overnight. One lane remains open alternating traffic direction.

The 24” water main repairs continue at Clopper Rd, between Mateny and Game Preserve, according to a social media posting by WSSC Water. “The large pipe has been dug up and will be cut out and replaced at site of break as soon as water flow within the pipe can be completely stopped. This is often a challenge… getting valves to hold closed.”


Germantown

Over the summer we let you know Gold’s Gym will be opening a new location at 12922 Middlebrook Road in Germantown, in the location of the DSW store that closed on April 10th in the Germantown Commons shopping center next to Bed Bath & Beyond.

In September  we spoke with a representative from Gold’s Gym current Germantown location in the Fox Chapel shopping center, and we’re told that the existing location will close when the new one opens “sometime next year.” According to advertisements on social media, the new Gold’s Gym location is now expected to open in “Spring 2023” (photo below).


MoCo

With last year’s Black Friday sales drawing 66.5 million Americans to shop in person and 88 million to shop online, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2022’s Best Places to Shop on Black Friday, with many retailers located in Montgomery County making it to the top 10.

WalletHub surveyed nearly 4,000 deals from 16 of the biggest U.S. retailers’ 2022 Black Friday ad scans to identify the stores offering the biggest discounts in various product categories such as “Appliances,” “Jewelry” and “Toys.” The following are some highlights from the report:


Gaithersburg

TC Mid-Atlantic Development V. Inc. has submitted Amendment to Final Site Plan application ASDP-9338-2022, requesting to reallocate 100,950 square feet of office density and 62,494 square feet of retail density between previously approved Buildings B1, B2, B3, C2, C3 and C5 in the Watkins Mill Town Center Urban Core.

On August 1, 2005, the Mayor and City Council approved Schematic Development Plan Application SDP-05-002 for a mixed-use project which include 1,066 dwelling units, 259,939 square feet of retail, 936,650 square feet of office, and a 394 room hotel.


Events

Public invited to provide testimony on draft plan that adds roads to the program and updates details for roads already included in the program

The Montgomery County Planning Boardwill hold a public hearing for the Rustic Roads Functional Master Plan Update on November 17 at 6 p.m. The public is invited to provide testimony in-person or virtually. Learn about testifying to the Planning Board. The public hearing was set on October 6 after a briefing to the Planning Board.


Beyond MoCo

The Avenue at White Marsh, a popular destination for many in Baltimore County, has announced that Silver Diner will be opening its first Baltimore County location at the shopping center. Silver Diner will be taking over the corner space adjacent to Barnes & Noble. Barnes & Noble, one of the original tenants at the shopping center,  has been temporarily closed for renovations since August with plans to reopen in early 2023.

In addition to being Baltimore County’s first Silver Diner location, the 8,125 SF restaurant will also be the 23rd overall restaurant for the company that recently opened its first DC location and has over 20 additional restaurants across Maryland and Virginia (with one in Cherry Hill, NJ).


MoCo Government

Earlier this afternoon, the Montgomery County Council unanimously confirmed the appointment of Dr. Kisha Davis as the new County Health Officer. County Executive Marc Elrich nominated Dr. David last month for the position. According to Council documents, the Health Officer position was extended to Dr. Davis for a salary of $200,000 plus benefits.

“Montgomery County has led the nation in our response to the COVID-19 pandemic thanks in large part to the leadership at our Department of Health and Human Services,” said County Executive Elrich when recommending Dr. Davis for the position. “With the nomination of Dr. Kisha Davis as our County’s next health officer, we have found a health expert and leader committed to innovation, equity, and access to healthcare. I want to thank Dr. Davis for accepting this position and I look forward to working with her, listening to her advice and following her guidance regarding the health issues and challenges facing Montgomery County.”


Beyond MoCo

Per the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office on 11/14: At approximately 12:20 p.m., today, Frederick County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 800 block of East Main Street, Middletown, Maryland, for the report of a dead body.

Deputies responded and found a decomposed body in the field behind the Safeway grocery store. Additionally, deputies found a 9mm handgun and a backpack. FCSO detectives are working to identify the body and have several leads.


Restaurants

Eat This, Not That has created “a round-up of positively reviewed Thai-focused restaurants in every state that you’ll want to visit at least once.” Montgomery County restaurant Charm Thai (8408 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring) earned the nod for the state of Maryland.

Per the list, “One Yelp reviewer calls Charm Thai the best Thai in Silver Spring. Now if that doesn’t speak volumes, the menu is loaded with authentic Thai cuisine from the crispy rice salad and crispy duck rolls to noodle lover soup and crab meat fried rice. Finish off the meal with a Thai-style fried banana for dessert. Open seven days a week.
