Silver Spring

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 4th District Investigative Section are investigating a residential burglary that occurred on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, in the 11800 block of Dewey Rd. Detectives have released photos of the male suspect and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying him. At approximately 9 a.m., 4th District Officers responded to the location for the report of a burglary.

The investigation has revealed that the suspect forced entry into the unoccupied home and began removing copper pipes. Moments later, a family member of the homeowner entered the house to conduct a damage inspection and observed the suspect in the basement. The suspect then ran out of the house. The family member took photographs of the suspect with his cell phone as the suspect was leaving the scene with the copper pipes in his possession.  Officers obtained items of evidentiary value from the residence.


Maryland

Outgoing Governor Larry Hogan released a press release this morning touting a 77% approval rating on his final day in office.  Governor-Elect Wes Moore and Lieutenant Governor-Elect Aruna Miller will be  sworn in on Wednesday, January 18, at the State Capitol in Annapolis. Per the State of Maryland:

Maryland Matters: “Political notes: Hogan rides off into the sunset with approval ratings intact… Gov. Larry Hogan (R) will leave office Wednesday with the same stratospheric job approval ratings that he’s enjoyed for most of his time in office. … Hogan’s job approval ratings would be the envy of any politician, and far outstrip voters’ feelings for President Biden.”


Silver Spring

Dunkin’ is now open at 14328 Layhill Road in Silver Spring. The store will hold its official grand opening this Saturday, January 21 beginning at 9am and the first 100 guests will receive free coffee for one year. The event will also feature a ribbon cutting, prize wheel, and an appearance by Dunkin’ mascot Cuppy. Additional details below courtesy of Dunkin:

“At 10:00 a.m. on January 21, local Dunkin’ franchisee Jesse Luis will host the store’s official ribbon cutting, followed by a check presentation to award Driven to Cure with a $1,000 grant in partnership with the Dunkin’ Joy in Childhood Foundation. Dunkin’ mascot Cuppy will be on hand for the festivities, which will include free merchandise and a chance for guests to spin Dunkin’s Prize Wheel.


Aspen Hill

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal collision that occurred the morning of Sunday, January 15, 2023, in the area of Muncaster Mill Road and Sycamore Lane in Aspen Hill.

At approximately 7:23 a.m., Montgomery County Police Officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the location for the report of a collision between two vehicles. The investigation by detectives has revealed that the driver of a black 2015 Honda Civic was traveling westbound on Muncaster Mill Road when he crossed the center line and struck a silver 2004 Ford Escape that was traveling eastbound on Muncaster Mill Road.


Germantown

Evidence of a shooting was found at a crash scene on Shakespeare Blvd, north of Germantown Rd, behind Neelsville Middle School in Germantown on Sunday evening. According to MCPD, “The preliminarily on scene investigation has revealed that at approximately 6:41 p.m., MCP officers responded to the intersection of Neelsville Church Rd. and Shakespeare Blvd. and located a vehicle with what appeared to be bullet holes and a firearm. Officers have not located any victim(s) or suspect(s).”

Silver Spring

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 12-year-old from Silver Spring. Elmer Alexis Guzman Osorio was last seen on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at approximately 9 a.m., in the 1000 block of Quebec Ter.

Elmer is approximately 5-feet tall and weighs 100 pounds. He has short brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue winter jacket, a white shirt and gray sweatpants.  Police and family are concerned for his welfare.

Rockville

Per MCPD: On Sunday, January 15, 2023, at approximately 7:23 a.m., officers responded to the area of Muncaster Mill Road and Sycamore Lane for the report of a collision between two vehicles.  The preliminary investigation has revealed that the driver of a black Honda Civic was traveling westbound on Muncaster Mill Road when he crossed the center line and struck a silver Ford Escape that was traveling eastbound on Muncaster Mill Road.

 The adult male driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the decedent will be released following proper notification of next of kin.   The driver and the front passenger of the Ford were transported to an area hospital with injuries believed to be non-life threatening.


Maryland

Per the State of Maryland: Last night (1/12)Governor Larry Hogan and First Lady Yumi Hogan hosted their final annual Lunar New Year celebration at Government House. More than 200 guests joined the Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives and the Governor’s Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs for the celebration, including dignitaries representing Washington, D.C.’s diplomatic corps and Maryland’s Asian American community leaders.

The Lunar New Year is one of the most widely celebrated and important cultural traditions observed by numerous Asian communities across the world and in Maryland. This year welcomes the Year of the Rabbit—a symbol of longevity, peace, and prosperity. In addition to being the last official Government House reception of the Hogan administration, this  marked the first official gathering since the permanent installation of the First Lady’s portrait in the main foyer alongside former first ladies.


Rockville

Per the City of Rockville: The Mayor and Council will hold a public hearing on recommendations by the Charter Review Commission to increase the number of elected councilmembers from four to six during their Monday, Jan. 30 meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. Lowering the voting age to 16, expanding the size of the Mayor and Council, term limits, representative districts, and consideration of ranked-choice voting were among recommendations the city’s Charter Review Commission presented to the Mayor and Council on Dec. 12.  The charter change recommendation subject to the public hearing would expand the Mayor and Council from five members to seven, meaning that, if enacted, the legislative body would comprise a mayor and six councilmembers.

Gaithersburg

On Monday, January 16, Pepco will begin repairs on the transmission tower and power lines that were damaged after a private plane crashed into them on November 27. The crash occurred near the intersection of Goshen Road and Rothbury Drive in Montgomery Village and resulted in an outage to approximately 85,000 customers across the county. The pilot and passenger of the plane suffered non-life threatening injuries. On December 6, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released its preliminary report on the incident.

According to the Village News, “Pepco will begin by replacing the overhead lines that were damaged. This work is scheduled to take place between Monday, Jan. 16 and Friday, Jan. 27. The work to replace the damaged overhead lines will be located on Pepco right-of-way between Montgomery Village Avenue and Fulks Farm Road in Montgomery Village and Gaithersburg. A helicopter will be utilized for some of the work involved in the replacement of the overhead lines.
