MCPD Investigating Strong-Arm Robbery of Dollar Tree; Surveillance Video Released

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect who robbed a Dollar Tree on Wednesday, November 9, 2022. Detectives have released surveillance video of the suspect. At approximately 8:31 p.m., 5th District officers responded to the 18000 Mateny Rd. for the report of a strong-arm robbery that just occurred.

The investigation by detectives determined that 18000the suspect entered the store, retrieved merchandise to purchase and went to the counter. While the victim was helping another customer, the suspect pushed the victim out of the way. The two struggled and the suspect stole an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register.

$50,000 Winning Powerball Ticket Sold in MoCo Remains Unclaimed; Two $1 Million Tickets Sold in Maryland Also Unclaimed

A $50,000 winning Powerball lottery ticket sold November 7 at the Check Cash Depot at 8476 Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring remains unclaimed as of Tuesday, November 15. The ticket was purchased for last week’s historic Powerball drawing that had a jackpot of over $2 billion.  Outside of MoCo, a $1 million Mega Millions ticket sold November 8 at 7-Eleven (9151 Riggs Road) in Adelphi and a $1 million Powerball ticket sold November 7 at One Mile Liquor (6600 Baltimore National Pike, Suite L) in Catonsville have also yet to be claimed. Winners of prizes larger than $25,000 must redeem their tickets at the Maryland Lottery Customer Resource Center in Baltimore, which is open by appointment only. Prizes of up to $5,000 can be claimed at any of more than 400 Expanded Cashing Authority Program (XCAP) locations. Montgomery County Council Meets on November 15 at 9 a.m. to Conduct Interviews and Vote on Appointments for the County Health Officer and Director of the Office of Human Resources

Review: The Council will review Bill 13-22, Buildings – Comprehensive Building Decarbonization, which would require the County Executive to issue all-electric building standards for new construction, major renovations and additions by Jan. 1, 2024.

All-electric building standards will help the County achieve its zero-greenhouse gas emissions goal by ensuring future construction is electrified. Exemptions would be provided for emergency backup systems and certain uses such as manufacturing, crematories, life sciences and commercial kitchens. In addition, income restricted housing and schools will have an extended timeline.

MoCo Alcohol Beverage Services Partners with Local Businesses to Curb Drunk Driving During the Holiday Season with Coaster Campaign

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) is partnering with local businesses to curb alcohol-impaired driving during the holiday season. ABS is distributing beverage coasters that feature a QR code directing patrons to an online list of alternative rides to get home safely when drinking. Imprinted with the phrase “Had one too many? Scan for Ride,” the coasters are being distributed free of charge to bars and restaurants. The goal is to provide an easily accessible list of alternative rides to patrons and deter them driving after they have been drinking.

The online list that can be accessed from the coaster QR code features contact information for vehicle-for-hire services such as taxicabs, Uber and Lyft, as well as local public transportation. It also includes the Washington Regional Alcohol Program’s SoberRide discount ride program for selected holidays.

Uber Driver Carjacked Sunday Night

An Uber driver was carjacked on Sunday night in Silver Spring. According to MCPD, “On Sunday, November 13, at approximately 10:43 p.m., officers responded to the 900 block of Silver Spring Ave. for the report of a carjacking that just occurred.  The preliminary investigation has revealed that three suspects stole a black 2022 Kia from an adult male victim (Uber driver) who had just dropped off a passenger at the location.” This is an active and ongoing investigation.  We will post an update when additional information becomes available.

Three Arrested After Armed Carjacking in Gaithersburg Ends in Crash

Three suspects were arrested after carjacking a Toyota Corrolla in Gaithersburg early this morning. According to MCPD, “On Monday, November 14, 2022, at approximately 1:34 a.m., MCP officers responded to the 7800 block of Guildberry Ct. in Gaithersburg for the report of a carjacking that just occurred.  The preliminarily investigation has revealed that the adult male victim was approached by the 3 suspects (two males and one female) as he exited his Toyota Corolla. The suspects produced firearms and demanded the victim’s vehicle. The victim complied, and the suspects left the scene in the Toyota.  

Officers located the Toyota and attempted to pull it over, but the driver of the Toyota continued driving at a high rate of speed. Officers followed the Toyota. In the area of 270 HWY and Democracy Blvd., the suspects lost control and crashed.  Three suspects were apprehended, and two firearms were recovered.  The suspects sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to an area hospital.  This is an active and ongoing investigation.

Montgomery County Council’s Statement Condemning Recent Incidents of Antisemitic Graffiti

The Council stands in strong solidarity with our Jewish community and condemns all acts of hate and religious bigotry. There is no tolerance in Montgomery County for these hateful actions and abhorrent, violent imagery attacking the Jewish community.  Earlier this month, the Council unanimously passed a resolution reaffirming our commitment to address antisemitism and protect our Jewish community from these awful acts of hate. 

“These hateful acts are not only a desecration of public spaces but hurtful and damaging to the entire Montgomery County community. The Council extends its deepest gratitude to the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) for actively investigating these antisemitic acts and thanks the Department of Transportation for a swift response and clean-up.

CAVA will be holding a community event on Thursday, November 17 from 10:45am-2pm at the new CAVA Digital Kitchen in Germantown. Mobile Sports Betting in Maryland Likely to Launch by Thanksgiving; Governor Hogan Releases Statement

Per the State of Maryland: Governor Larry Hogan today issued the following statement after the Maryland Lottery & Gaming Control Agency announced that the launch of mobile sports wagering in Maryland may take place in time for Thanksgiving:“Today we are proud to report that sports fans can finally plan for the official launch of mobile sports betting in the State of Maryland.

“To reach this point, we have had to overcome countless legal, political, and bureaucratic delays that threatened to push back the launch past the Super Bowl next year. It was completely unacceptable to me, and we spent months pressing for decisive action. Thanks to those efforts, and after repeated interventions by our administration, we now anticipate the launch of mobile sports betting this month, and we are cautiously optimistic that it will be in time for Thanksgiving.

Maryland State Police Release Video Footage Of Fatal Road Rage Shooting In Prince George’s County

Per the Maryland State Police: As the investigation continues into a fatal road rage incident that claimed the life of a tow truck driver in Prince George’s County, police are releasing video footage and asking anyone with relevant information to contact the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit.

On Saturday, March 19, 2022, Delonte Hicks, a 29-year-old tow truck driver, of Washington, D.C. was shot while traveling on eastbound Route 50 at Veterans Parkway in Prince George’s County. At approximately 5:45 p.m. police believe Hicks was exchanging words with the driver of a black passenger car (pictured below) when he pulled out a weapon and fired into the vehicle, striking Hicks. The gunman continued eastbound on Route 50.
