Beyond MoCo

Bojangles, a southern fast food chain that specializes in Cajun fried chicken and biscuits, is coming to 1312 West Patrick St in Frederick.  According to a report by @thecityoffrederickmd on Instagram, final Site plans for the restaurant were submitted to the City of Frederick Building/Permits Department for approval on October 24.  Menu items include bone-in fried chicken, chicken strips, biscuits, sweet tea, green beans, and dirty rice. According to their website, Bojangles’ has restaurants in 12 states, as well as an international location in Honduras. Currently the closest locations to Montgomery County are in Sterling, VA and New Carrolton, MD.

In August we reported that Rise Southern Biscuits & Righteous Chicken is coming to 16248 Frederick Rd in Gaithersburg, in the recently renovated Rock Grove Center on the corner of 355 and Shady Grove Rd. The center is also home to Minerva Indian Cuisine, Qdoba, and the recently relocated Dunkin Donuts. The North Carolina-based biscuit chain is known for their buttermilk-brined chicken and currently has Maryland locations in Columbia and Towson.  Menu items include biscuit sandwiches, biscuits & gravy,  fried chicken strips, and donuts. The restaurant is expected to open this fall.


MoCo Government

Per Montgomery County: Incumbent Councilmembers Gabe Albornoz, Evan Glass, Will Jawando and former Gaithersburg City Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles were the unofficial winners in the Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022, Gubernatorial General Election for the four at-large seats on the Montgomery County Council. Incumbents Andrew Friedson (District 1) and Sidney Katz (District 3) were the unofficial winners in their respective district races. In the races for five open Council seats, Marilyn Balcombe (District 2), Kate Stewart (District 4), Kristin Mink (District 5), Natali Fani-González (District 6) and Dawn Luedtke (District 7) were unofficial winners.

Silver Spring

10PM Update: According to MCPD, “Officers responded to the back of the 9000 block of Piney Branch Road at approximately 6pm for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival officers located a male that was transported to an area hospital in serious but stable condition. During the investigation, K9 officers located a deceased person in a wooded area. MCPD is on scene and investigating the circumstances surrounding this person’s death.”

8PM Update: Montgomery County Police responded to a shooting in the 9000 blk of Piney Branch Rd in Silver Spring on Monday, November 9, around 6:30pm. According to public safety reporter Cordell Pugh, Montgomery County Police 3rd District Officers aided the victim of the shooting prior to MCFRS arrival. The victim was transported by EMS to an area Trauma Center. We will post an update when more information becomes available. This was the second shooting today in Silver Spring. This morning at approximately 4 a.m., MCPD officers responded to the area of Colony Road and Northampton Drive for the report of shots fired.  Officers arrived on scene and located a deceased person, with trauma to the body, to the rear area of the 100 block of Colony Road. 


Bethesda

“Saved by the Bell’s” Mario Lopez will be appearing at Westfield Montgomery Mall on Sunday, November 20 to host a holiday concert to benefit Children’s National Hospital.  The event is open to the public, but RSVPs are encouraged and will enter guests in to win a meet and greet with Mario Lopez.  Funds donated at the event will directly benefit activities and memorable moments for childhood-aged patients residing at the hospital. Per Westfield Montgomery: On Sunday, November 20 (11AM) Westfield Montgomery is officially kicking off the season with the Home for the Holidays Concert with celebrity guest emcee, Mario Lopez – FREE to attend, but suggested donations will benefit Children’s National Hospital.


Rockville

Mukuka is approximately 5-feet, 4-inches tall and weighs 110 pounds. She has brown eyes and brown hair. It is unknown what clothing she was last seen wearing.  Police and family are concerned for her welfare.  Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Natasha Mukuka is asked to call the police non-emergency number at (301) 279-8000 (24-hour line). Callers may remain anonymous.


Bethesda

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded and secured the area and gas station personnel on scene are currently awaiting a repair crew. There we no injuries reported and the excavator was not damaged. We will post an update when additional information becomes available.

Gaithersburg

Permanent signage has been erected and construction is ongoing at the upcoming Roaming Rooster at 511 Quince Orchard Rd in Gaithersburg. The restaurant will be located in space previously occupied by Duck Donuts in the Firstfield Shopping Center. Duck Donuts permanently closed in August. Roaming Rooster is known for its variety of buttermilk fried chicken sandwiches that vary in heat depending on the diner’s preferences – mild, medium or hot. In addition to its free-range, grain-fed, antibiotic-free and Halal chicken, Roaming Rooster offers an all week breakfast menu, salads and sides including wings, chicken tenders and hand-cut fries.

This will be the chain’s second Montgomery County location. Its Pike & Rose location at 11586 Old Georgetown Road in North Bethesda opened on June 21. No opening date for the new location has been announced.


Germantown

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division have arrested and charged 24-year-old Kevin Figueroa-Funez, of Germantown, with the Capital One Bank robbery that occurred on November 8, 2022, in the 10200 block of River Rd. in Potomac.  At approximately, 1:51 p.m., 2nd District officers responded to the location for the report of a bank robbery that just occurred.

The investigation by detectives has determined that Figueroa-Funez entered the bank armed with a nail gun, approached an employee behind the counter and passed a note announcing the robbery and demanding money. The employee complied and handed over an undisclosed amount of money to Figueroa-Funez, who then left the scene.


Bethesda

Per Montgomery County: The Arts and Social Justice Fellowship (ASJF), presented by Strathmore with Core Partner Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company,  is looking toward its second year of identifying a next generation of artists with activism. Applications for the 2023 program are now being accepted, with a deadline of Sunday, Nov. 20. The program supports youth leadership and vision at the intersection of arts and social change.

The fellowship centers youth leadership, young people’s vision of the future and building community in the face of crisis. It was created in 2021 as part of Strathmore and Woolly’s co-presentation of Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower by Toshi Reagon and Bernice Johnson Reagon. It is seeking young artists whose activism reflects Butler’s dynamic lineage. More about the program, and the application form, can be found at 2022 Highlights (strathmore.org). The fellowship will broaden in 2023 to include study of a series of performances taking place at each presenting institution.


Gaithersburg

Clear Skies Meadery has announced it will open its new meadery at 15201 Display Ct in Rockville on December 9. Clear Skies current location, which opened at 325 Main St. in Gaithersburg in 2020, is scheduled to remain open until March 31, 2023.

The new Rockville location will include a bigger production line that will allow the company to expand the canning and bottling of its product. Mead is an alcoholic beverage created by fermenting honey with water, sometimes with various fruits, spices, grains, or hops. Clear Skies offers a rotating list of flavors, including current seasonal ones like apple pie, cranberry, and pumpkin pie.


Germantown

CAVA Digital Kitchen at 19865 Century Blvd in Germantown is scheduled to have its grand opening on Friday, November 18. CAVA Digital Kitchen differs from a traditional CAVA location in that there is no in-store ordering, all orders must be placed through the CAVA app. The restaurant does feature an indoor and outdoor dining area.
