Drawing of Swastika Found at Middle School

A drawing of a swastika was found on a desk at Silver Creek Middle School at 3701 Saul Rd in Kensington on Thursday. The school sent out the following message to the community on Friday:

“Dear Silver Creek Families,
I am writing to inform you that a drawing of a swastika was found on a desk in one of the classrooms. This was brought to the attention of the administration yesterday. Once the teacher shared this with security, it was quickly removed. Administration followed MCPS protocol by contacting the cluster security coordinator, the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD), and the Office of School Support and Well-Being.

Our highest priority is the safety and security of our students. As a No Place for Hate school, we find this behavior to be unacceptable and against the core values we embrace at Silver Creek. As such, students who engage in this type of behavior will be given appropriate disciplinary actions aligned with the MCPS student code of conduct.”

In response to a parent’s tweet regarding the incident, Councilmember Will Jawando said, “This is horrible. I’m sorry your daughter and the Silver Creek community were subjected to this. I’m thankful that @MCPS moved quickly to remove the hateful drawing. We are committed as a county to speaking out against antisemitism and all forms of hate. We are better than this.”

Councilmber Kate Stewart also tweeted, “I am deeply troubled by the swastika found on a desk at Silver Creek MS in Kensington in District 4. My staff and I will be discussing enhancing the curriculum around Antisemitism with @MCPS. Hate has no place here.”

In December, antisemitic graffiti was found at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda.
