Notes From Police Press Conference On Shooting at Magruder High School

Montgomery County Police held a press conference at approximately 5:40pm regarding the shooting that took place at Magruder High School in Derwood earlier this afternoon. Speaking at the press conference were Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones and MCPS Interim Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight.

  • Chief Jones stated that Montgomery County Police remain on the scene investigating a shooting that occurred at Magruder High School.
  • 9-1-1 was called at 12:57
  • Lockdown by 1:05pm (the lockdown has been lifted).
  • The school building was secured by MCP and Sheriff’s office
  • The suspect was taken into custody shortly after 3pm.
  • The victim was transported to an area hospital, where he is in serious condition.
  • Chief Jones and Dr. McKnight commend Magruder Principal Lee Evans and Magruder High School staff and students on how the incident was handled.
  • The suspect and victim were both students.
  • The incident is under investigation and a reason for why it happened isn’t known at this time.
  • Suspect was apprehended in the school (in a classroom).
  • The suspect was not a danger to other students, police determined there was not an ongoing threat. “It wasn’t an active shooter. There was no other threat to the school community.”
  • The gun was found nearby.
  • Police doesn’t know how the gun got into the school and does not know whether or not it was a ghost gun at this time.
  • Police has not yet spoken with the suspect’s parents.
  • Crisis management team will be at Magruder High School over the weekend and into next week.
  • Employee assistance program will also be available to all staff members.
  • Supports for students and staff will continue to be provided not only at Magruder, but at all schools.
  • Safety and security of students and staff is MCPS’ #1 priority.
