A student-led Montgomery County-based nonprofit is quickly making an impact across the region, collecting and distributing hundreds of pairs of shoes to students and families in need just weeks after launching. Lift Every Step, founded by Brianna Frank and her brother Brandon, is a registered 501(c)(3) organization focused on increasing access to essential footwear throughout the DMV. What started out of a garage in Montgomery County has rapidly grown into a community-driven effort with donation sites and partnerships across the area.

MoCo Pride

The City of Rockville Human Rights Commission is seeking sponsors to support the 10th anniversary of Rockville Pride, the city’s annual celebration of its LGBTQ+ community.

Rockville Pride is scheduled for 2 pm to 5 pm on Sunday, June 7 at Rockville Town Square. The event will feature community engagement and activities celebrating inclusion and diversity. More information, including sponsorship applications, is available at rockvillemd.gov/pride.


Maryland

Pepco has submitted a proposal under Maryland’s 2024 Distributed Renewable Integration and Vehicle Electrification, or DRIVE, Act that would use customer-owned devices such as home battery storage systems, electric vehicles, smart thermostats and other flexible energy resources to help support the electric grid during periods of high demand.

Beyond MoCo

Everyone has their favorite smash burger, the one that they claim is better than the rest. With so many places serving them, it can be hard to tell the difference from one to another. But if you haven’t tried the smash burgers from Smash Akhs, you need to have it go head to head against your favorite. This food truck that is primarily stationed outside the Glenn Dale Fire Association in Glenn Dale, MD (11900 Glenn Dale Blvd) is serving up one of the best in the greater Maryland area.

Gaithersburg

Update: According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the fire occurred Sunday (4/5) at a two-story single-family home on Prince Hall Court. One family was able to escape the home, while firefighters rescued several dogs during the incident. Four of the six dogs inside were saved, but a seventh dog did not survive.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews responded to a working house fire in the 7700 block of Prince Hall Ct. in Gaithersburg.
