Republic Announces it Will Close Permanently After 10 Years in Takoma Park

by MCS Staff

Popular Takoma Park restaurant Republic, located at 6939 Laurel Ave, has announced that it will be closing its doors on September 4th, after operating for a decade at the location. The full statement can be seen below:

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the closing of
Republic. Our last day of service will be Sunday, September 4th.

The last 2 ½ years of the pandemic have been merciless, unforgiving, and ultimately a hardship from which we could not recover. At the same time, our lease is set to expire and we have been unable to come to an agreement with the landlord on how to move forward.

We are immensely grateful for the last 10 years. Thank
you to our wonderful guests for their continued support. Thank you to the town of Takoma Park for embracing us as part of the community. Thank you to our amazing employees, past and present, for supporting the vision of Republic.

Fortunately we are able to move the staff from Republic to our other restaurants where they hope to see you soon!

Small businesses are struggling every day. Please continue to support your favorite restaurants and local shops.”

They could build low-cost housing there instead. The people of Takoma Park would love it.

I’m so sorry to hear this. Ebony makes the very best Manhattan’s and is always a delight to see. Maybe move to downtown Wheaton? We could sure use a place like Republic!
