What’s Opening, Closing, and Coming Soon to Montgomery Mall

Below is a list of several businesses that have recently opened and closed at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda, as well as others that are coming soon.

COMING SOON: New York men’s based fashion store Psycho Bunny, which specializes in polo shirts, will be opening on the bottom level of the mall this fall. From their website: “We could have done what everybody else was doing. But we didn’t. Instead we set out to make the perfect polo and the most luxurious tee you’d ever wear. And that’s exactly what we’ve done. Our Pima cotton is woven from longer, smoother fibres. This has a number of benefits, most important of which is that it gives the fabric an incredibly soft on-body feel. The longer fibres are more durable, too—less prone to warping and tearing, while retaining their colored dye considerably longer than traditional cotton.

NOW OPEN: SAYKI is now open in the location that was previously home to Michael Kors. SAYKI offer a variety of men’s clothing. According to SAYKI, the company is originally an Istanbul-based brand that dates back to 1924 under its parent company Hatemoglu. Currently a third-generation business, SAYKI has launched in the US in 2016 with its first store in Madison Avenue, New York. Michael Kors closed its Montgomery Mall location this past spring.
Per SAYKI: “With almost a century long experience in high quality menswear and retail under its belt, SAYKI’s design philosophy is to elevate a timeless elegance with modern silhouettes. We specialize in combining the finest quality fabrics with clean, classic cuts to deliver long sustaining pieces.

COMING SOON: Jolly Yolly Kids is coming to Westfield Montgomery Mall, according to report by WTOP. The 8,000+ square ft. indoor play space will have playgrounds, party rental space, and an art studio. Per Jolly Yolly: “Jolly Yolly Kids is an indoor play and learning center for children aged 13 and under. The center has a play area of approximately 8,500 square feet, equipped with a multilevel premium indoor play structure for children aged 13 and under, tot lots for children from 2 to 7 years old, baby area for children aged 2 and under, and party rooms. The primary services offered will be children open-play and birthday parties. And our mission is to create an unmatchable experience in a Bright, Safe, Clean, Fun and Friendly environment.”

This will be Jolly Yolly Kids 2nd location. The company opened its first location at 11001 Lee Highway in Fairfax, VA, in 2019. Jolly Yolly Kids is expected to open by the end of 2022, according to the report. Photo courtesy of Yolly Jolly Kids on Facebook.

CLOSED: DQ/Orange Julius in the food terrace has permanently closed.  You can still find DQ/Orange Julius combo stores at 12603 Wisteria Dr. in Germantown, and 2019 Viers Mill Rd in Rockville. You can still get ice cream/frozen desserts from Yogi Castle, Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, Haagen Dazs, and Moorenko’s inside the mall.

COMING SOON: Suki Hana is expected to open any day now, according to a representative at the kiosk we spoke to last week. Per its Arundel Mills description, “Suki Hana/Wokaholic brings the best of the Japanese and Chinese cuisine. Their delicious teriyaki dishes are cooked fresh to order on their teppanyaki grill” It looks as though the Montgomery Mall location will offer sushi as well as salads and appetizers, but will not offer teriyaki dishes.
The signage at the Montgomery Mall location originally referred to the restaurant as “Sarku Hana,” but was quickly updated to ‘Suki Hana’, since there is no connection between the restaurant and Sarku Japan, which is also located in the Montgomery Mall food court. Suki Hana is also opening a Wheaton Mall location.

RECENTLY OPENED: Lazzaro’s Authentic Italian Deli is now open in the Montgomery Mall Food Court, located in the space recently occupied by Big Al’s Sub Shop. The restaurant features imported cold cuts that are cut fresh daily, homemade meatballs, cannolis, and more.
Owner Larry tells us his family owned Lucia’s Deli on University Blvd in Wheaton back in the 80’s. The business was eventually sold and the company became what is now Mama Lucia’s. He’s wanted to open a deli for as long as he can remember and felt the food court location was a good fit.  He plans to bring the same work ethic and authenticity that has mother brought to Lucia’s when he was growing up.
Menu items have pop culture inspired names like the Donnie Brasko, Frank Sinatra, and the Joe Pesci Pizza Steak.

CLOSED FOR REMODELING: Under Armor closed on April 26 for remodeling and has opened a temporary location in the mall at the former site of Sports Nation, which closed back in February. The temporary store features a majority of their inventory, except for kids clothing. The remodeled store is expected to open around October.

Kevin Plank, founder of Under Armour, grew up in Kensington. He is the youngest of five brothers born to William and Jayne Plank. His father was a prominent real estate developer who passed away in 1993. A local project of his was the Al Marah subdivision off River Road, just off of exit 39 on the Beltway.  His mother was the mayor of Kensington for 8 years, from 1974-1982. She went on to direct the Office of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs at the United States Department of State under President Ronald Reagan, and was a real estate broker until the early 2000s. Read more about Kevin’s story here.

COMING SOON: The upcoming HalfSmoke location in Montgomery Mall hopes to open in “two weeks”, according to a representative from the restaurant, which would make it an early July opening. HalfSmoke will be located in a kiosk in the food terrace that was the former home of Coldstone Creamery and more recently Gelato Galaxy. Though there have been separate restaurants off of the food court that serve alcohol, this will be the first restaurant/bar that’s actually located in the food court to serve alcohol.

The menu will consist of the best selling sausages and sides from their DC location, as well as boozy milkshakes and a funnel cake bar. HalfSmokes sister restaurant Butter Me Up opened its Montgomery Mall location last week. Butter Me Up is located in the old Aroma Espresso Bar location, which is downstairs near the Old Navy entrance and features “instagrammable” decor, will offer a menu that consists of a variety of breakfast sandwiches, toasts, sides, bowls, smoothies, and juices.
