Restaurants Announced for Upcoming The Heights Food Hall; Details on “Stall Wars” Competition

Common Plate Hospitality (CPH) has announced the restaurants that will be featured at the upcoming The Heights Food Hall at Wisconsin Place in Chevy Chase. The new food hall will be opening in the space formerly occupied by Anthropologie and PF Chang’s on the 5400 block of Wisconsin Ave. The food hall will offer both indoor and outdoor patio dining and will be open seven days a week from 11am-Midnight. According to the group, the following “culinary partners” are in the lineup:

CPH will also be holding a “Stall Wars” competition, where one food hall stall will be awarded to an “enthusiastic culinary aficionado and entrepreneur” who otherwise would not have the means to open a location. According to CPH, “the top three finalists will have the chance to tell their story and display their culinary talent in a 30-minute ABC7/WJLA Good Morning Washington segment. The winner will be announced on television and offered the opportunity to open their own culinary business at The Heights Food Hall.”

MoCo’s Second Amazon Fresh is Now Open in Chevy Chase

Amazon Fresh has opened its second Montgomery County location at 8531 Chevy Chase Lake Terrace. The location opened on Thursday, September 1st. This is the second Amazon Fresh in Chevy Chase with additional MoCo locations coming to Gaithersburg and White Oak.

Chevy Chase Lake Amazon Fresh is outfitted with Amazon’s cashierless Just Walk Out technology. The upcoming Gaithersburg location will also have the same technology and may open later this month, though that has not been confirmed by Amazon.

Detectives Investigate Assault That Occurred in Hallway of Apartment Building; Suspect Sketch Released

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police -2nd District Investigative Section are currently investigating an assault that occurred in the 2400 block of Colston Dr. in Chevy Chase. Detectives have released a sketch of the male suspect and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying him.

On Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at approximately 2:05 p.m., officers responded to the location for an assault that just occurred. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the victim who stated that she was walking in the hallway of the apartment building when an unknown male suspect attacked and choked her.

Sushiko Reopens for Dine-In Customers

Sushiko is known for being D.C.’s first sushi restaurant, opening in the 70s in Glover Park. That location closed in 2013, but in 2008 the restaurant opened its Montgomery County location in Chevy Chase (5455 Wisconsin Ave). Sushiko’s indoor dining has remained closed since Covid-19 restrictions shut down indoor dining in March 2020, but has recently reopened.

Chef Piter Tjan, Sushiko’s executive chef, got one of his first jobs as a sushi chef at Bethesda’s Raku. He worked there for three years before leaving to open Sushiko in 2008. He left Sushiko to work under Tyson Cole in Austin’s Uchi, one of the most popular sushi restaurants in America, and remained there until 2013 when he returned to Sushiko and has been back ever since.

Ice Cream Spot That’s Coming to MoCo Makes Thrillist’s ’40 Best Ice Cream Shops in the U.S.’ List

Thrillist, a national media platform that covers food, drink, travel, an entertainment, has created a list of the ’40 Best Ice Cream Shops in the U.S.‘ Though the list doesn’t include any ice cream shops that are currently in MoCo, it does include a shop that will be coming to MoCo very soon. Back in March, we reported that Baltimore’s The Creamery is making its move into MoCo, with a location coming soon to Chevy Chase Lake in Chevy Chase. According to OpenCorporates, The Charmery will be moving in to 8551 Connecticut Avenue, Suite 202, a 1,306 SF location. Currently, The Charmery has locations in Hampden, Union Collective, Towson, Federal Hill, and it’s first location outside of Baltimore, in Columbia, that opened in 2021. We’ll have an opening date/timeframe as soon as it’s available.

Per Thrillist: David and Laura Alima opened their dream ice cream shop The Charmery in 2013 and have since grown it to include a factory and event space, as well as more locations in the suburbs. Flavors here are incredibly creative, socially conscious, and rotate often. Some mainstays include the locally inspired and fudgey Maryland Mud and salty-sweet Old Bay Caramel, and one-offs have been an ice cream to celebrate Pride, the savory Baked Ricotta Orange, and Fear Factory flavors every Halloween (Pickled Onion Sorbet, anyone?) Needless to say, the Alimas churn humor and whimsy into everything they do.

Montgomery County Woman’s Death Being Investigated After Her Body Was Found In Chesapeake Harbor East on Saturday

Anne Arundel County Police are investigating the death of a 43-year-old Montgomery County woman whose body was found in Chesapeake Harbor East on Saturday. The woman’s identity has not been released, but it has been reported that the woman is from Chevy Chase.

At approximately 1:30pm on Saturday, July 30, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department was dispatched to the community off of Edgewood Road in the Annapolis area for a body that was found in the water. Upon arrival, the fire department requested the Anne Arundel County Police to assist at the scene. Her body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy and identification. Chesapeake Harbor is located just outside Annapolis city limits. Anne Arundel County Police continues to investigate the death.

Four Defendants Facing Federal Charges for Mail Theft From Montgomery County and Possession of United States Postal Service Keys

Per the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Maryland: A federal grand jury has returned an indictment charging four defendants with theft of mail matter and the unlawful possession of postal service keys. The indictment was returned on July 21, 2022 and unsealed today upon the defendant’s arrests. Charged in the indictment are:

• Eyalan Owona, age 21, of Upper Malboro, Maryland;

Mike Tyson’s Cannabis Brand Expands National Footprint to Four New Markets, Including Maryland (Includes Two Montgomery County Locations)

Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson’s cannabis brand, Tyson 2.0, announced its launch in four additional markets: Arizona, Maryland, Ohio and Pennsylvania with Columbia Care. The expansion into Maryland will include two Montgomery County locations– in Chevy Chase and Rockville. Mike Tyson previously lived in Montgomery County, where his former home at Congressional Country Club sold last summer.

Per the press release: Columbia Care is Tyson 2.0’s exclusive national cultivation, manufacturing and distribution partner in the markets where it operates. The partnership was first announced in October of 2021, with products hitting shelves in November of 2021. Tyson 2.0 is now available in nine Columbia Care markets, with more planned in the coming months.

Man Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison for Role in Auto Theft Ring

The details are provided in a summary below, adapted from the State’s sentencing memo. Kemp was essentially the ringleader of a group who would travel from the District of Columbia into Chevy Chase, MD and steal cars from driveways and garages. In at least one case, they entered a home and burglarized it. A co-defendant, Azriel Echavarria, was sentenced to 18-months on April 26^th, 2021 for burglary in the first-degree for his role in one of the incidents in June of 2020.

“We thank Assistant State’s Attorney Hannah Gleason for her work in this matter and Judge Burrell for appropriately holding this defendant accountable for such brazen, repeated auto theft in our community. This career criminal will no longer be able to target residents in Montgomery County,” said State’s Attorney John McCarthy.

Updates on Several Arson Investigations

According to Chief Spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services Pete Piringer, Fire Investigators recently arrested Bill Clinton Gomzez, 18, of Rockville and charged him with 2nd degree arson for allegedly setting a vacant house on fire on N. Horners La in Rockville on April 23, 2022. Gomez, along with a juvenile, was also charged for motor vehicle thefts in April and June of this year that also involved arson.
