Sale of Commanders to Group Led By MoCo Native Josh Harris Expected to Be Approved at Today’s NFL Owners Meeting

In May it was announced that the Washington Commanders and a partnership led by MoCo native Josh Harris (Chevy Chase) have entered into a purchase and sale agreement. Earlier this week, the NFL finance committee voted unofficially to recommend approval of the deal to buy the Commanders with various sources saying the NFL has reached an agreement with Daniel Snyder to resolve any remaining legal issues. Today, the approval is expected to become official at the NFL owners’ meeting in Minneapolis.

The sale to the group led by Philadelphia 76ers co-owner and Chevy Chase native Josh Harris, Potomac billionaire Mitchell Rales, and NBA legend Magic Johnson for just over $6 billion is expected to close on Friday. Snyder purchased what was then the Washington Redskins for $800 million in 1999 after the death of previous owner Jack Kent Cooke.

Two Men Arrested for Multiple Thefts from Autos in Bethesda

Per MCPD: Two men have been arrested for multiple thefts from autos in the Bethesda area that they committed on Tuesday, July 18, 2023. At approximately 3:18 a.m., 2nd District officers responded to the 8500 block of 16th Street for the report of a theft from auto in progress. The preliminary investigation revealed that two Black males, wearing all black clothing with blue rubber gloves, were walking around and attempting to open the doors of multiple cars in the area.

Upon arrival, officers located two suspects matching the description and placed them under arrest. The suspects were identified as 23-year-old Matthew Alfonso Scott Jr., of Washington D.C. and 22-year-old Manden Jervell Turner, of Hyattsville. During a search of Scott, officers located a window punch and blue latex gloves. While searching Turner, officers located a loaded black High Point 10 mm handgun and a backpack containing a stolen purse and multiple stolen wallets and bank cards.

‘The Roots of Modern Bethesda – Part II’ Will Be Presented Online by Montgomery History on Thursday, July 27

Per Montgomery County: The Bethesda Historical Society’s Hank Levine, who last year led a Montgomery History presentation on the development of Bethesda from 1750-1920, will advance the story of one of the County’s most prominent communities in The Roots of Modern Bethesda—Part II. The online presentation will start at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 27.

In his original look at the evolution of Bethesda, Mr. Levine addressed the geography and advances in transportation that set the stage for the development of the community.In his continuing look at Bethesda, Mr. Levine will tell the story of how in the century after the end of World War I Bethesda became the affluent suburb and urban center of today.

Reformation Now Open in Bethesda

Reformation is now open at 4823 Bethesda Ave in Bethesda Row. Dog Haus Offering Free Hot Dogs Today (Wednesday, July 19) For National Hot Dog Day

Dog Haus Biergarten, which has three Montgomery County locations (Gaithersburg, Bethesda, and Silver Spring), is offering a free hot dog to those who text FREE DOG to 833.440.1110. “We can’t think of a better way to celebrate National Hot Dog Day than offering a free Haus Dog to all our fans,” says Dog Haus Co-Founder André Vener. “We have the best hot dogs and sausages in the business – the industry’s gold standard. Guapo’s Bethesda Has Reopened After Temporarily Closing For Renovations

Popular local restaurant chain Guapo’s has just reopened its Bethesda location at 8130 Wisconsin Avenue after a brief closure for renovations. The restaurant announced that the Bethesda location is open again as of Tuesday, July 18th. Guapo’s has an additional Montgomery County location in Gaithersburg at Rio Lakefront.

Late owner Hector Rincón, originally from Colombia, opened the original Guapo’s in Tenleytown in DC in the early 90s. Per Guapo’s, the Rincon family arrived in Virginia in the late 1970’s. All four children graduated from Fairfax County schools and universities and continued to invest in their community. They believed that their businesses should provide opportunity and pride to demonstrate the dedication to their hometown and the metropolitan area. Now their children continue the same aspirations as their grandparents did when they arrived over 30 years ago.

First Look at The Salt Line (Bethesda)

The Salt Line opened this past week in Bethesda Row, taking over the location at 4900 Hampden Lane that was previously home to Greek restaurant Kapnos until 2018. The restaurant held its grand opening on Tuesday, July 11th. We stopped by for dinner on opening day and put together a little video to see just some of what you may experience (videos below).

According to the restaurant, the opening menu at features a selection of beloved New England favorites also found at The Salt Line’s Navy Yard and Ballston locations, as well as additions from Executive Chef Eric McKamey and Long Shot Hospitality Chef/Partner Kyle Bailey. Highlights include the Local Heirloom Tomato Salad, Bucatini and Clams, Maine Peekytoe Crab Roll, and more. In addition to full beer and wine lists, the cocktail program is heavily influenced by the New England lifestyle and showcases imaginative twists on timeless classics such as the Cape Codder G&T, The Blue Cheese Martini, Sbagliato Spritz, and more. The interior evokes a nautical feel, with mahogany paneling, brass fixtures, booths inspired by yacht seats, a huge u-shaped bar, and vintage coastal ephemera throughout.

Mr. MoCo’s 15 Favorite Ice Cream Spots in MoCo

In honor of National Ice Cream Day (Sunday, July 16th), I wanted to share my current 15 favorite ice cream spots in MoCo. I say current because this list often changes with places moving in and out of my rotation. While I love just about every ice cream place there is, I’m choosing the 15 that appeal to me the most right now. I’m also including places that offer “frozen treats” because I consider it all in the ice cream family. If there’s a place not listed, it’s just not currently in my top 15, which is likely to look different than yours (I’m only one person and can only eat so much ice cream, so there are also likely places I haven’t been to yet 😊). The list you’ll see below is accurate as of July 16th, 2023:

15. Sprinkles (Potomac): A Potomac Village staple since the late 80s, I first tried Sprinkles at some point in the 90s. It’s a bit out of the way in terms of things I’ve done in general so I haven’t been lately, but I enjoy it when I go.

Kema by Kenaki in Soft Opening Phase at Cabin John Village (Potomac)

The long awaited Kema by Kenaki is currently in its soft opening phase at 11325 Seven Locks Rd. STE 115 in Cabin John Village. The restaurant will be open from 11:30am until 8:30pm from Wednesday through Sunday (closed on Monday and Tuesday).

The almost 2,000 square foot restaurant will be very similar to what Kenaki in Kentlands offers, but will be more “fast paced,” in what will be a hybrid between Kenaki and AKO. Kenaki is a full-service restaurant while AKO is a sushi counter at a food hall. Kema will offer signature rolls from Kenaki/AKO such as the Black Magic roll- made with “forbidden rice”, spicy tuna, pickled jalapenos, and truffle oil, the Donkey Kong roll- made with eel, fried plantain, cream cheese, cucumber, tempura flakes, togarashi spice mayo, and sweet shoyu, among others.

The Montgomery County Planning Board was briefed on the Friendship Heights Urban Design StudyScope of Work at its July 13 weekly meeting. The Scope of Work lays out the Montgomery County Planning Department’s approach to studying how residents, business owners, and visitors experience the open spaces, pedestrian and transit networks, activity centers and public life in Friendship Heights today.
