One MoCo Restaurant’s Soup Makes Eater DC’s “Must Try Soups Around DC” List

With November signaling the start of “soup season” in the area, Eater DC had released its list of “Must-Try Soups Around DC” with one Montgomery County restaurant/soup making the list– the warm vichyssoise soup at Joy by Seven Reasons in Chevy Chase.

The soup goes for $15 and is available on the dinner menu. Per Eater, “Chef Enrique Limardo’s playful Seven Reasons spinoff opened last month in Chevy Chase with a warm vichyssoise soup (potato, cauliflower-leeks, chile guajillo oil, sea bean, and rosemary oil).”

Arrest Made in 1988 Rape Case; Suspect Apprehended in Montgomery County

Per Fairfax County Police: A 34-year-old sexual assault case was closed on Monday with the arrest of George Thomas Jr., 61, of Arlington. George Thomas Jr. was charged with two counts of rape, sodomy and abduction for a sexual assault that occurred at 10:40 p.m. on Aug. 24, 1988. George Thomas Jr. and the late Gregory Allen Thomas of Arlington abducted the 22-year-old victim as she left her job at the Skyline Mall at 5195 Leesburg Pike.

The two brothers approached the victim in a parking garage and physically assaulted her. The victim was forced into her car and made to drive to a secluded location. The victim was led to a wooded area, and both men raped her before forcing her back into her car. The victim was made to drive to another location and raped again. The victim was able to escape to her car and drove away following the second assault. Fairfax County police officers responded the evening of the assault and forensic evidence was collected. A DNA Profile foreign to the victim was developed from the forensic evidence collected and searched against the Virginia DNA databank. The profile was also submitted to the National DNA databank. The victim provided details that were used to create a composite sketch of one of the suspects. Detectives received numerous tips with possible suspect information and followed up on all leads. No arrests were made.

Two Areas in Montgomery County Make “25 Richest Cities in America” List

24/7 Wall Street, a financial news and opinion company with content delivered over thr internet and featured on various national websites, used five-year estimates of median household income from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2019 American Community Survey (ACS) to create its list of “25 Richest Cities in America” list For 2022. Included in its list are two areas (technically not cities) in Montgomery County– Potomac (ranked 7th) and Bethesda (ranked 20th). The list only includes municipalities with populations greater than 25,000. Olney is also ranked 44th on this list.

“Based on the 2019 five-year ACS data, many cities in America were noticing a massive rise in income, with much of the wealth concentrated in California—a whopping nine of the 25 richest cities in the U.S. are located within the state. Despite being home to more than a third of the country’s richest cities, California is not the richest state—Maryland, with a median household income of $86,738, is—nor is it home to the richest city.”

Second Suspect Arrested in Connection With Armed Robbery of Apple Store in Bethesda Involving Gold Gun and Gold Cadillac

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division have arrested and charged 27-year-old Brianna Zigler, of Oxon Hill, MD, with the armed robbery of an Apple store in the 4000 block of Bethesda Ave. Through the investigation, detectives identified Zigler as the second suspect involved in the armed robbery of the Apple store. On November 10, 2022, detectives obtained an arrest warrant, charging Zigler with armed robbery related charges.

On November 22, 2022, Zigler was arrested on Southern Ave. in Oxon Hill, MD. She was transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where she has been released on a $5,000 bond. Press release on first arrest below:

Walter Johnson Alumnus Sebastian Salazar is Providing World Cup Coverage on ESPN

Sebastian Salazar joined ESPN in late 2016 as a host, reporter and play-by-play announcer. Salazar appears regularly on ESPNFC as well as the network’s Major League Soccer coverage. Currently, the Bethesda native is covering the World Cup at ESPN.

About Sebastian Salazar: In the summer of 2018, Salazar covered the Mexican national team at the FIFA World Cup, appearing on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN Radio from Russia. Since joining the network, Salazar also has covered the International Champions Cup, the USWNT and the Little League World Series. He also regularly contributes to the ESPN podcasts TwoOnTri, Max & Herc and ESPNFC.

Bethesda Business Makes Shark Tank Appearance (Spoilers Inside)

Bethesda based clothing line Collars & Co. was featured on the November 11 episode of Shark Tank on ABC. Many may have seen the clothing company’s signature item, the “Dress Collar Polo”, a buttery soft polo with a standard English spread collar that is said to be more comfortable than a normal collared shirt. Collar & Co went on Shark Tank seeking $300K for 4% equity at a $7.5 Million valuation from the sharks. Continue reading if you want to know how it went.

According to its website, Collars & Co.’s mission is to “provide men and women with extremely high quality clothing that not only looks great, but feels amazing as well.” The business sells shirts, sweaters, underwear, and accessories. Bethesda resident Justin Baer presented his product, asking for $300K for a 4% equity (valuation of $7.5M). The business launched in 2021 and went viral on TikTok, leading to 500 orders off the bat and $40K in revenue the first month after the video’s release.

MoCo Native Maury Povich to be Inducted Into The Greater Washington Jewish Sports Hall of Fame Tonight

Maury Povich will be inducted into the Greater Washington Jewish Sports Hall of Fame tonight at tonight’s Dinner of Champions that will take place at the Bender JCC in Rockville. Povich is a five-time Woodmont Country Club match and medal play champion on the golf course, maintaining his 2.1-Handicap. He began his successful broadcasting career as a sports radio producer for the Washington Senators alongside Bob Wolff during the summers of 1955-61, which turned into a sports, news and daytime talk show career spanning 67 years.

His daytime talk show Maury came to an end this September after a thirty-plus year run. Povich was a local reporter before gaining national fame as the host of A Current Affair. The Maury Povich Show began airing in syndication in 1991 and was rebranded simply as “Maury” in 1998. The show’s most popular segment features Povich reading DNA paternity results in front of his studio audience. Maury Povich graduated from Landon in Bethesda. His wife, journalist Connie Chung, graduated from Blair in Silver Spring.⁣ His father, Shirley Povich, was a sportswriter at The Washington Post. Maury was born and raised in the area and graduated from the Landon School (Bethesda) in 1957.⁣ Maury is the son of the late Washington Post columnist Shirley Povich, who was part of the first class of Greater Washington Jewish Hall of Fame inductees.

New York’s Chip City is Opening its First Maryland Location in MoCo

Five years ago, cookies were a side hustle for Theodore Gailas and Peter Phillips. Since then, they’ve opened over a dozen Chip City cookie shops in and around New York with its first Maryland location opening at the Shoppes of Bethesda, replacing Fancy Cakes By Leslie at 4939 Elm St. Fancy Cakes by Leslie closed in October and the space has since been cleared out.

The new cookie shop rotates through 18 flavors, allowing customers to choose from those that make it on to the weekly menu. The weekly roster can include “core cookies” like chocolate chip or dairy free chocolate chip, other flavors like blueberry cheesecake, peanut butter and jelly, Nutella sea salt, and more. Currently, location are offering seasonal Thanksgiving cookies with flavors like Pecan Pie, Sweet Potato S’mores, Pumpkin Spice Latte, and White Chocolate Cranberry Oatmeal.

Detectives Investigating TD Bank Robbery in Bethesda; Surveillance Photos of Suspect Released

At approximately 10:32 a.m., 2nd District officers responded to the location for the report of a bank robbery that just occurred. The investigation by detectives revealed that the suspect entered the bank and approached an employee who was working behind the teller counter. The suspect then implied that he had a weapon and demanded money. The employee complied and handed the suspect a teller drawer, containing an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect took the money and left the scene.
