Montgomery County Completes Bikeway Construction on Woodmont Avenue in Bethesda and Will Reopen Reconfigured ‘Streetery’

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) has been constructing a link of the Bethesda bicycle network along Woodmont Avenue for the last few weeks, between Bethesda Avenue and Elm Street. The bikeway is separated from the roadway to protect bike riders. The cycle track is part of a new, two-way bike network in Bethesda that offers bright green, protected bike lanes. The cycle track loops around a wide stretch of Downtown Bethesda and connects to the Capital Crescent Trail.

Whether or not the streetery should remain closed to traffic as businesses returned closer to pre-pandemic status was the focus of a recent survey conducted by the County’s Bethesda Chevy-Chase Regional ServicesOffice (BCCRS) and the Bethesda Urban Partnership. Residents and businesses were asked for feedback.

Bethesda Central Farm Market Returns to Bethesda Elementary School

Bethesda Central Farm Market will return to Bethesda Elementary School (7600 Arlington Rd) on Sunday, October 16th. The market was operating out of the Bethesda Farm Women’s Market since June due to the elementary school having its roof replaced. The work on the roof took a bit longer than expected, but it is now complete and the market will be returning.

Central Farm Markets was founded in 2008 by Debra Moser and Mitch Berliner. Bethesda Central Farm Market was the first market, which began in a small parking lot with 17 vendors. Today Central Farm Markets has four farm markets in Maryland, DC and Virginia.

Free Electric Scooter Clinics for Those 18-and-Older Will Be Available in October and November

The clinics generally will last about two-to-four hours and e-scooters will be available at each site. Those interested in e-scooters can stop in at any time during the clinic.

Participants must have a valid driver’s license or ID. No registration is required to attend a clinic and walk-ups are welcome. Check tinyurl.com/5n8adjaj for cancelations due to inclement weather.

Pines of Rome Looking to Open Second Location

Pines of Rome has been a Bethesda staple for over 50 years, serving its extremely popular white pizza, spaghetti & meatballs, and other traditional Italian dishes. The throwback Italian restaurant that still uses the classic red-checkered tablecloths has tabbed WashUrban to spearhead their first ever search for a second location, Danny Rubin (Co-founder, WashUrban) tells us. The restaurant is located at 4918 Cordell Ave. in Bethesda, where it moved in 2017. Pines of Rome was previously located at 4709 Hampden Lane, opening in 1972. They are currently targeting Potomac, Rockville, and Gaithersburg as possible location for the second restaurant.

Detectives Investigate Armed Robbery of a 7-Eleven In Bethesda (Video)

At approximately 3 a.m., 2nd District officers responded to the location for the report of an armed robbery that just occurred.

The investigation by detectives has determined that two suspects entered the store, retrieved merchandise and placed the items on the counter at the cash register. The suspect provided payment to the employee for the items and was given change back from the register. At that time, the second suspect announced the armed robbery by lifting his shirt and displaying a handgun. The suspects instructed the employee to open the cash register and demanded money. When the employee complied with the suspects demands, one suspect reached over the counter and removed an undisclosed amount of cash from the register. The two suspects then exited the store.

NB Wisconsin Avenue Shut Down Following Collision Involving Motorcycle

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) we’re called to the scene of a traumatic injury due to a collision involving a motorcycle a little after 7am Wednesday morning, according to MCFRS Chief Spokeperson Pete Piringer.

The collision occurred in the northbound lanes of Wisconsin Avenue and Chestnut Street in Chevy Chase. Northbound Wisconsin Ave has been shut down as emergency medical services continue to evaluate a traumatic injury. Montgomery County Police has issued the following traffic advisory: Northbound Wisconsin Ave at Chestnut is shut down following a traffic collision. Drivers should expect significant delays and seek alternate routes.

Unclaimed $50,000, $20,000 and $10,000 Lottery Tickets Sold Last Week in MoCo

Several winning lottery tickets were sold this past week in Montgomery County that have yet to be claimed. They include a $50,000 winning Powerball ticket sold on October 5 at the W Express (5143 River Road) in Bethesda, a $20,004 winning Mega Millions ticket sold on October 5 at Safeway (403 Redland Blvd) in Rockville, a $10,000 Mega Millions ticket sold October 5 at Sugarloaf Wine Cellar (12955 Wisteria Drive) in Germantown, and a $10,000 Lucky Numbers ticket sold on October 3 at Ollie’s Beer, Wine & Deli (2011 Veirs Mill Road) in Rockville. All four tickets remain unclaimed as of October 11, according to the Maryland Lottery.

Winners of prizes larger than $25,000 must redeem their tickets at the Maryland Lottery Customer Resource Center in Baltimore, which is open by appointment only. Prizes of up to $5,000 can be claimed at any of more than 400 Expanded Cashing Authority Program (XCAP) locations. All Maryland Lottery retailers are authorized to redeem tickets up to and including $600. More information is available on the How To Claim page of mdlottery.com.

New Most Expensive Home For Sale in Montgomery County

Last week a new listing took the place of “most expensive home for sale in Montgomery County” when 8801 Fernwood Rd in Bethesda was listed for $12.5 million. The 15,000 SF home (photos below) is listed by Daniel Heider of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty and has 6 bedrooms to go along with 10 bathrooms (8 full, 2 half).

Walter Johnson Football Coach, Larry Hurd Jr., Named ‘Ravens High School Coach of the Week’

Larry Hurd, Jr., varsity head football coach of the Walter Johnson Wildcats (Bethesda, MD), has been named the Ravens High School Coach of the Week. Now in its 26th year of existence, Hurd is the fifth recipient of the award in 2022.

Last Friday (9/30), the Wildcats defeated the Northwest Jaguars, 10-7, for their first victory over their Montgomery County foe since 2009. Leading 3-0 in the fourth quarter, Walter Johnson secured the winning score on a 48-yard rushing touchdown from senior RB Elijah Barringtine. The result improves the Wildcats record to 4-1 on the season.

Bethesda Row Arts Festival Takes Place October 8 and 9

The 24th Bethesda Row Arts Festival, one of the Washington, DC area’s premier outdoor fine arts festivals, will take place on Saturday, October 8th (11am-6pm) and Sunday, October 9th (10am-5pm) at Bethesda Row (directions available below).

Over 165 artists from around the country will showcase their work across four blocks — including painting, drawing, jewelry, photography, sculpture, fabric, glass, ceramics, wood, and many other mediums. The event is free to attend, and family-friendly.
