Three MCPS Schools Received Additions Ahead of Start of School Year

I’m addition to Harriet Tubman Elementary School becoming the 210th MCPS school, MCPS saw revitalizations/additions at John F. Kennedy High School (Silver Spring), Odessa Shannon Middle School (Silver Spring), and Westbrook Elementary School (Bethesda).

John F. Kennedy, a 280,048-square-foot school in Silver Spring, received a 52,085-square-foot addition. Its newest features include a school-based wellness center, space for the Medical Careers Academy, and technology and special education suites. The school also received new artificial turf on the stadium field; Bermuda grass and an irrigation system installed on the practice field, and new tennis courts atop a new elevated parking structure.

MoCo Theaters to Participate in National Cinema Day; All Movie Tickets $3 on Saturday, September 3

Several Montgomery County theaters will offer $3 tickets this Saturday, September 3 as a part of National Cinema Day. According to www.nationalcinemaday.org, the $3 tickets are for “every movie, every showtime, and every format.” Some theaters will also offer food and drink discounts, such as AMC, who are offering a fountain drink and popcorn combo for $5. Two Juveniles Arrested on Vandalism Charges for Spray Painting Graffiti at Middle School in Bethesda

The second incident occurred on Saturday, July 20, at the same location. The responding officer met with the school principal, who stated two male juveniles were seen spray painting vulgarities on the school walls, basketball court and track. The principal believed the individuals appeared to be the same subjects involved in the first vandalism at the school. Officers were called to the school again, on Sunday, August 21. Responding officers discovered that a wall near the baseball field had been vandalized with spray paint.

During the course of the investigation, two juvenile males were identified and charged on August 24 and August 26, with three counts of malicious destruction of property, related to the vandalisms on the above dates. The juveniles were released to their parents and their cases are now being handled by the Montgomery County Department of Juvenile Services. Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) may apply disciplinary measures in accordance with the MCPS Student Code of Conduct.

Ever/Body to Open First Maryland Location in Cabin John Village

Ever/Body, a woman-led beauty and wellness company that announced $55.5 million in series C funding earlier this summer, is opening it’s first Maryland location in Potomac’s Cabin John Village. At that time, Ever/Body announced plans to expand into new markets, starting with the opening of six locations across the East Coast by the end of 2022. In addition to its three existing NYC locations, Ever/Body will open three new locations in the greater New York City area, and three in the DC Metro area (Logan Circle in D.C. and Arlington in addition to Cabin John Village). Plans for further nationwide expansion are on the horizon in the near future. We don’t have an expected opening date, but we are told construction on the location will begin in the near future.

Ever/Body created a proprietary training program for providers that includes 300-500 hours of clinical practice and didactic lectures, far exceeding the current industry average. The program is led by a team of internal educators and outside experts and will roll out nationally as the business expands. A hallmark of the curriculum is its comprehensive diversity and inclusivity training to ensure that all clients’ needs are met with the highest standards.

Total Wine Reinvests in MoCo Headquarters

Per Amanda Winters, Maryland.gov blog: Total Wine & More, the largest independent wine retailer in the nation, is growing its presence in Montgomery County, Md. and creating more than 180 new jobs in the state.

The company – located at 6600 Rockledge Drive in Bethesda – is planning to renew its existing lease and add up to 75,000 square-feet at its headquarters. Total Wine is currently on track to employ 654 full-time workers at the facility by the end of 2022, and will add its new employees over the next five years.

Landon School Prepares to Relocate Historic Building

Landon School, a private, college prep school for boys located at 6101 Wilson Ln in Bethesda, will be relocating a historic, 80+ year old building on their campus on Wednesday, August 31. According to the school, “It is a massive undertaking and preparations have been underway for the last several months to make sure the building, which was built more than 80 years ago, is properly preserved and prepared for the move.” Montgomery County based Coakley & Williams Construction is handling the move. Amazon Fresh to Open Second MoCo Location on September 1, According to Report

Amazon Fresh will open its second Montgomery County location at 8531 Chevy Chase Lake Terrace on Thursday, September 1, according to a BizJournals report. This will Also be the second Amazon Fresh in Chevy Chase with additional MoCo locations coming to Gaithersburg and White Oak.

According to the article, Chevy Chase Lake Amazon Fresh location will be “outfitted with Amazon’s cashierless Just Walk Out technology.” The upcoming Gaithersburg location will also have the same technology and may open later this month, though that has not been confirmed by Amazon.

La Catrina Bar & Lounge is Coming to Bethesda

La Catrina Bar & Lounge is coming to 4935 Cordell Avenue in Bethesda, taking over the location that was formerly home to George’s Chophouse, 4935 Bar & Kitchen, The Loft at 4935, Tragara’s, and others.

La Catrina boasts “the true Mexican experience” and “tacos, tequila, and party”, as the space consists of two levels that can be used for dining, dancing, and more, which allows for a different experience from the other recently opened restaurants in Bethesda that offer Mexican cuisine (Chaia, Mexicue, Tacombi). La Catrina tells us that they are hoping for a late September opening.

MCPD: “There has not been a spate of attacks on women at Westfield Montgomery”

Following various reports of assault at Westfield Montgomery (Montgomery Mall) by local bloggers and users of the neighborhood social networking app NextDoor, Montgomery County Police Spokeswoman Shiera Goff tells us via email that “unfortunately, a lot of misinformation has been spread over the last few days.”

A recent post on NextDoor claimed that there have “been 10 assaults at Montgomery Mall by teens against women in the past three months.” In the email to us regarding the recent reports, Goff also stated “There has not been a spate of attacks on women at Westfield Montgomery.”

Greek Aroma Grill Coming to Montgomery Mall

Greek Aroma Grill is coming to the Montgomery Mall food terrace. Greek Aroma currently has a location at 177 D Thomas Johnson Dr. in Frederick, MD. Menu items include gyros, kababs, salads, and souvlaki. No opening date has been announced and the restaurant is currently hiring.

Also coming soon to the mall’s food terrace is Malia’s Kitchen, which will be holding its grand opening on Thursday, September 1. Malia’s is taking over the space that was previously occupied by Lazzaro’s Authentic Italian Deli and Big Al’s Sub Shop. Malia’s Kitchen serves soul food and seafood, which they describe as the best “homemade” down home cooking in the DMV. Items on their menu includes crab cakes, fried chicken, fried fish, and BBQ.
