Ice Cream Spot That’s Coming to MoCo Makes Thrillist’s ’40 Best Ice Cream Shops in the U.S.’ List

Thrillist, a national media platform that covers food, drink, travel, an entertainment, has created a list of the ’40 Best Ice Cream Shops in the U.S.‘ Though the list doesn’t include any ice cream shops that are currently in MoCo, it does include a shop that will be coming to MoCo very soon. Back in March, we reported that Baltimore’s The Creamery is making its move into MoCo, with a location coming soon to Chevy Chase Lake in Chevy Chase. According to OpenCorporates, The Charmery will be moving in to 8551 Connecticut Avenue, Suite 202, a 1,306 SF location. Currently, The Charmery has locations in Hampden, Union Collective, Towson, Federal Hill, and it’s first location outside of Baltimore, in Columbia, that opened in 2021. We’ll have an opening date/timeframe as soon as it’s available.

Per Thrillist: David and Laura Alima opened their dream ice cream shop The Charmery in 2013 and have since grown it to include a factory and event space, as well as more locations in the suburbs. Flavors here are incredibly creative, socially conscious, and rotate often. Some mainstays include the locally inspired and fudgey Maryland Mud and salty-sweet Old Bay Caramel, and one-offs have been an ice cream to celebrate Pride, the savory Baked Ricotta Orange, and Fear Factory flavors every Halloween (Pickled Onion Sorbet, anyone?) Needless to say, the Alimas churn humor and whimsy into everything they do.

Detectives Ask for Assistance in Locating Missing Fifteen-Year-Old

Tatum Tomlinson was last seen on Sunday, August 7, 2022, at approximately 9 a.m., in the 6700 block of Tomlinson Terr.

Tomlinson is 5-feet, 6-inches tall and weighs approximately 112 pounds. She has blonde hair and blue eyes and was last seen wearing a blue sweatshirt, white shorts and white sneakers. She has a nose ring and both ears are pierced. She was also carrying a large blue suitcase with wheels.

Statement from County Executive Marc Elrich on Hateful Vandalism Near Bethesda Trolley Trail

County Executive Marc Elrich has released a statement on the hateful vandalism found near the Bethesda Trolley Trail this weekend. The full statement can be seen below:

“I am saddened, upset, and, quite frankly, disgusted over the racist vandalism that occurred near the Bethesda Trolley Trail this weekend. This incident follows other recent attacks of vandalism and hate throughout the County over the last several months. Trying to intimidate others through fear will not succeed and will not be tolerated. I encourage anyone with any knowledge or information about this vandalism to contact the Montgomery County Police Department as soon as possible. Hate has no home in Montgomery County, and we will be investigating and prosecuting those responsible to the fullest extent of the law.

Governor Hogan Visits Several MoCo Businesses

On Friday, August 5, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan did a tour of Montgomery County, visiting several local businesses. He started the day off at the Glen Echo Fire Department, which is scheduled to undergo major renovations after receiving a state grant. He then toured Maxim Biomedical on E. Gude Dr. in Rockville, one of the few companies that produce American-made COVID-19 rapid antigen tests, followed by a tour of Twin Valley Distillers, also on E Gude. Twin Valley was the first distillery to open in MoCo in over 100 years and owner Edgardo Zuniga tells us Twin valley was, “honored having the Governor visit when he presented us a proclamation for small business in Maryland.”

Hogan then spent the afternoon in Poolesville visiting the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary, McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area, and having lunch at the recently reopened Bassett’s Restaurant.

Montgomery County Sisters Who Died in New York Fire Will Be Remembered at Monday Service

Jillian Wiener, 21, and Lindsay Wiener, 19, both of Potomac, were killed in an early morning house fire in the Southampton hamlet of Noyac around 3:30am Wednesday morning. The sisters, who are both graduates of The Holton Arms School in Bethesda, were vacationing with family. Funeral services for the sisters have been set by the Washington Hebrew Congregation, and can be seen below:

The funeral service for Jillian and Lindsay Wiener will take place on Monday, August 8 at 11:00 am at Washington Hebrew Congregation (3935 Macomb Street NW, Washington, DC).

Bethesda Gourmet To Close Later This Month

Bethesda Gourmet, a small cafe/deli that has operated inside one of the Bethesda Towers at 4350 E W Hwy #100 for over a decade, will be closing towards the end of the month, according to one of the owners we spoke with earlier this week. The restaurant offers traditional breakfast and lunch items, as well as daily specials that include a variety of Korean and Chinese dishes.

An auction for the restaurant’s equipment, which has already started, is running until August 26th. 68 different items, ranging from coolers and refrigerators to fryers and griddles, are being auctioned off with the winners being able to pick up the equipment on August 27th.

Montgomery County Woman’s Death Being Investigated After Her Body Was Found In Chesapeake Harbor East on Saturday

Anne Arundel County Police are investigating the death of a 43-year-old Montgomery County woman whose body was found in Chesapeake Harbor East on Saturday. The woman’s identity has not been released, but it has been reported that the woman is from Chevy Chase.

At approximately 1:30pm on Saturday, July 30, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department was dispatched to the community off of Edgewood Road in the Annapolis area for a body that was found in the water. Upon arrival, the fire department requested the Anne Arundel County Police to assist at the scene. Her body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy and identification. Chesapeake Harbor is located just outside Annapolis city limits. Anne Arundel County Police continues to investigate the death.

New UMD Basketball Coach Kevin Willard Buys Home in Potomac

New Maryland Men’s Basketball head coach Kevin Willard, and his wife Julie, have purchased a home in Montgomery County. The custom home constructed and designed by PKK Builders and GTM Architects is in Potomac and sold for $4.9 million in July, according to public record (photo below). Kevin Willard was named the new head coach of the Maryland Men’s Basketball program in March. Willard recently coached Seton Hall to its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last six years the tournament was held, having won a regular-season conference championship, conference tournament championship and earning conference coach of the year, Willard is one of 10 active head coaches in the Power 6 conferences to achieve each of the accomplishments in the last six seasons.

The home is described as a “six-bedroom, seven-and-a-half bathroom stunner features over 11,000 square feet of thoughtful design and resort-styled landscaping with manicured backyard.” It was built in 2014 and boasts palatial front doors, wide plank oak hardwoods, a gourmet kitchen, stone patio with a complete and covered outdoor kitchen, waterfall, three-level elevator, his and her offices, heated master bathroom floors, and a lot more, according to the listing by Washington Fine Properties.

Montgomery County Sisters Die In Fire While Vacationing in New York

Jillian Wiener, 21, and Lindsay Wiener, 19, both of Potomac, were killed in an early morning house fire in the Southampton hamlet of Noyac around 3:30am Wednesday morning. The sisters, who are both graduates of The Holton Arms School in Bethesda, were vacationing with family, according to Lt. Susan Ralph of the Southampton Town Police Department.

According to The East Hampton Star, The father, identified as Washington Hebrew Congregation President Lewis Wiener, awakened to the sound of glass breaking and alerted the family to get out. He and his wife escaped the home, but when they realized the children hadn’t exited the home, the father attempted to gain entry back in. The flames, however, prevented him from gaining access, Southhampton Town Police Lt. Susan Ralph told reporters in a news conference. The children, including the girl’s brother Zachary, 23, were sleeping on the second floor, and the parents were sleeping on the first floor. Zachary Wiener jumped from a second-floor window to escape the flames.

Four Montgomery County Restaurants Listed in Eater DC’s ’15 Top-Tier Vegan Restaurants’

Eater DC released a list of ’15 Top-Tier Vegan Restaurants Around D.C.’ and four restaurants locate din Montgomery County have made the list. According to the article, “There are chic, upscale tasting menus; homey vegan comfort food spots with hefty, filling plates; and massive, consistent fast-casual chains.“, while also noting that quality vegan meals can be found at many restaurants that didn’t make the list.
