A few weeks back we wrote a piece that told “The Story Behind The DMV.” This led to a fun debate on what the area referred to as the DMV is actually made up of. We took all of your thoughts and opinions, threw in some of ours, and put together the map in our featured photo that shows a general opinion of what people think the DMV actually consists of. Below are some notes based on the feedback we received:

Last November, the Netflix show “The Crown” reached Netflix’s top 10 most watched shows. The hit drama follows Queen Elizabeth II’s long reign of Great Britain. Unfortunately, the show didn’t cover the Queen’s tour to the United States and Canada in 1957. On October 19, she and the Duke of Edinburgh cheered among 45,000 other fans at a University of Maryland (UMD) football game.

The Maryland Terrapins were playing against the North Carolina Tar Heels. While watching her first game of American football, the Queen stood next to Maryland governor Theodore McKeldin (to the right in the photo) and University of Maryland president Wilson Homer “Bull” Elkins (to the left in the photo).

President Donald Trump and Governor Larry Hogan Exchange Barbs on Twitter

President Donald Trump tweeted a report from Breitbart News that states Maryland Governor Larry Hogan paid for flawed COVID tests from South Korea back in April. In the tweet, he referred to the Maryland governor as a RINO, which stands for “Republican in name only.”

Inside the Squared Circle Returning for One Night Only

Inside the Squared Circle was on the air in Montgomery County from 1989 until 2014. ITSC started off as a radio program broadcasting out of a tiny AM station on Watkins Mill Rd. in Gaithersburg before moving to Montgomery County Cable Access television in 1992, where it ran for over twenty years.

When the regional nickname “the DMV” rose to popularity in the 2000s, locals jumped on it. Once obscure, it can now be heard in daily conversation or on the radio and news. It appears in several of locally grown rapper Wale’s tracks, and Nicki Minaj gave it a shoutout in her song Beez in the Trap. You might also find it in the Twitter or Instagram bio of a person who wants to show off their local roots. But where did this nickname come from, and who is officially a part of the DMV? Why does it have such a hold over the region?
